Hello all - my rather old (back when they were powred by pidgeons!) W3J won't work on battery.
If I disconnect it from the AC adapter while it's running, it immediately reboots, gets to giveio.sys when booting safe mode - and freezes.
My warranty is still intact, but before I send this over to the lab, I wanted to check if this was a known problem and if there is some simple way to fix it...

Does the computer acknowledge that there is a battery in when it is on AC? Also, have you checked and or cleaned the battery contacts?

enter the setup and make a battery calibration test

The computer acknowledges the battery, and apparantly charges it.
I've tried the battery calibration from the BIOS and it didn't fix the problem; also, if it helps anyone, NHC says the battery wear level is 7%.
I've also tried replacing the battery with a spare battery I own (and haven't used in a while), and the problem persists - so it's probably not the batteries -
I would suggest reinstalling or updating some drivers:
- ATK/ACPI
- video
and also possibly BIOS. Take them from the support.asus.com website.
Problems of this kind have been reported as far as I remember with faulty or modded drivers. -

Thanks E.B.E, updating some drivers and installing some other stuff from ASUS' website has solved my battery issue (Hurrah!).
Unfortunately, it made me notice another issue - ASUS LiveUpdate doesn't work. The tray icon appears, but the update itself will not work - It's process gets to around 50% CPU usage and stays there, using more and more RAM until I force it to close.
I've downloaded the latest version of LiveUpdate (for XP of course) from ASUS' website and still it does not work. What does it do anyway? Does it merely download some drivers or does it flash the BIOS too? -
Forget about LiveUpdate, uninstall it, it's recognized for being a useless junk that only knows how to eat up memory.
I doesn't do anything really.
Just get rid of it.
Glad my suggestion helped. -
Yeah, it never works

this sounds like a driver problem not hardware

Yep, he already solved it by drivers.
