I was looking today and they finally have the W3J on the asus web site. They have all the specs, just like Justin said.
Look at the pics. The trackpad has dots; there appears to be only one mouse button. Theres also some new lettering on the cover. I cant tell if the case is a differernt color or not.
Heres the link: http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=5&l2=26&l3=0&model=1072&modelmenu=1
They mention that the W3J has Avivo, anyone know what that is?
-
Looks pretty nice. I would have expected them to make a few small cosmetic changes to differentiate it from the W3V.
The dots on the trackpad are different, but still kinda cool.
Lettering, I can do without. But all being said, the small stuff doesn't really detract from the overall aesthetic of the machine. I still think it has that "zen" of simple elegance.
I'm all over it like white on rice, stink on poop, mud on a hog, etc.

PIMP!
Loving it - I think it was mentioned that the mouse button works like a two button.
Avivo: http://www.ati.com/technology/Avivo/index.html -
I noticed that the ATI "badge" on the site is for the X800, not the X1600. Heh. You would think with all the time they've had in preparing for this launch someone could use the correct "sticker," "badge," or whatever.
-
Yea I noticed that also. lol

The specs don't indicate whether the HDD is IDE or SATA. Does anyone know the answer to this?
The overall arrangement is very similar to the previous W3 models, including having the Kensington Lock slot too close to the USB ports to be usable.

Ohhh boy...that's the Global site...I don't see if in the N.America site yet.
Visually, that's gotta be it though right? -
One step closer.
-
Yeah, I searched and browsed and couldn't find it on the usa.asus.com site. -
lookin awesome.....what's the price....and is it configurable??
-
1800$USD It is configurable but you void the global warranty. Usually replaced by sellers warranty.
-
no external volume control..........
-
Could you post the link...... -
No it's not configurable. As an ensemble the W3j is a package deal. $1799 is the list price.
Justin said that he wouldn't arrange pre-orders until he had a stronger sense of production dates. Since he's updated his web-site to list pre-ordering beginning Mar. 27 I would wager that a N. American release is on track. -
-
Thanks for the info KansaKilla, I hadn't seen that yet. I know you've already seen Justin's recent posts on the W3j thread so I wouldn't be too worried about the release. It might still be a couple of weeks, but it looks like he's gearing up to start looking at pre-orders.
-
-
Yeah, but Justin also said that when the W3v was released only 15% of the pre-orders went to forum members. Even given limited initial orders I think we have a really solid chance to be among the first shipments given our close contact with those who know. I wouldn't stress.
-
Why do you guys all like it so much? The notebook itself is very good priced, however, the screen is a little too small in my opinion... Do you like small screens?
-
The screen size is all relative. For form factor vs usability, I think the w3j is a good compromise. If you think the screen is too small, you probably don't mind larger dimensions of the overall computer.

ETA week of 4/16
*Advanced Orders Start 3/27 -
Thanks for the heads-up Johnny9. I had read the debate about configuring ensembles via an on-line dealer, but if I were looking to spec out the W3j I would probably do it myself. That way you wouldn't void the Asus warranty (so long as you put back the original parts when you send in the machine to be serviced).

Looks darker, though it may be the lighting.
I kinda hoped it had the W3z colour scheme heh -
Hummm dark colors. My Darth Vader Laptop.
-
-
hmmm...a little duct tape, some tweezers, and a few threatening phone calls could take care of that problem.
-
Thanks! Now it's back up! (Honestly, it wasn't this morning...)
-
Thanks for the news -- one step closer to getting this laptop in my sweaty mitts.

That touchpad is just like what they put on the new V6j.... with the dots and everything... but going with the new touchpad surround - ie: the virtual buttons - that's new even to me. Although I know it's the focus of all of the totally new designs for the year, I didn't think it was going to be put on the W3..... I believe it when I see it, but that picture does certainly seem to indicate it - although pictures can never be trusted.
-
I have seen on a UK reseller site that the drive will only be a 4200 Rpm?
this can't be right????? well i at least hope not! -

I'm assuming that 3/27 is correct? -
PROPortable Company Representative
But yeah... 3/27 is correct..... I'm thinking of getting it live for the 24th though - especially after the emails from last night....... most all of them read - "can't you just let me get an order in now?" - Just after the emails I got from the last 12 hours - I'd say the W3j is going to be at least as popular as the W3v was last year and that could turn out to be a problem. -
Clear out your old internet files and such. Its the same page same everything like Justin said.
-
If your deadline was next february, would you wait or get the W3J?
My main factor is whether Asus will have a 64 bit intel processor notebook by then. If they dont then I will get the W3J. -
If so...isn't that a long long long time away by technology standards? -
yea but the V1J that comes out in August/september still has the X1600 and core duo. So unless Asus comes out with new notebooks in that 4 month time frame then there wont be any major updates from the W3J.
-
You're looking at a whole different world by next February, though I can't speak for Asus specifically. Personally, I would get the W3j, it should remain competitive for as long as anything you might buy within the next six months or so.
-
Isn't the risk of obsolescence the only known quantity with buying any technology that moves upward quickly? I've seen hundreds of times where the advice is "buy it when you need it".
-
I tried deleting all the temp files, cache, logging in under another user id, and even using a different browser to check. It comes up differently based on which link I click, and if I navigate through the site. Only proportable.com (without the www) comes up with the 3/27 date. I'm behind a firewall at work, maybe that has something to do with it. Dunno.

even tho i kind of know the answer 99% sure, but still want some verification
just one quick question for resellers, do u guys have return policies?
think im gonna pre-order w3j. but worried that if there're problems i can't tolerate. -
^ I would imagine they all do, though you need to read the fine print for each one. Hit the Asus site and they give you a list of all Resellers, and then do the research.
Don't be surprised if they all charge restocking fees to return notebooks though - I've found that to be the case for the most part. -
I'm fond of the new look of the W3j, hope it comes to the US market looking like that.
-
Yeah, it looks pretty sweet..love the touchpad....if it's for real.
-
I am curious, on Asus' website it says under supplied accessories that it has a wireless mouse and a carrying bag. I noticed that ProPortable specifically says no carrying bag. Will some resellers offer these accessories?
-
PHP, here is Justin's post on the carrying case issue.
I cannot speak for the retailers here, but if you are from the US then the chances of getting a carrying case or mouse are probably not that great. If you are from a different corner of the world then it might be possible. The best thing to do would be to call up the reseller from whom you are considering purchasing the laptop. He / she would probably be able to give you more specifics. -
Wow KansaKilla, LOL, your fast. I was going to reference your post to Justin's link for PHP as well. PHP, use search bro. It works great.
-
Thank you KansaKilla, I didn't realize it had already been discussed. None of the previous specifications listed talked about a carrying case or mouse for the W3J. So I figured if it had been discussed it would be in this thread. Guess I was wrong.
-
No problem.
