How much should the HD temp be at max? When I turn the notebook on, it's really low. But after few hours, its almost 60 degrees celcius. Is this normal? Or is my HD about to loose it for good?

You'll want to keep it below 60C to be safe. Most of the hard drives manufacturers aren't clear about max temps, they state a max operational temp (usually 55C) which isn't the same as the drive temperature that the SMART sensor reports.

A relatively warm running drive is normal for the W3 series, the hard drive isn't cooled very well. What are your ambient/room temps? Since the drive isn't actively cooled by the fans, the ambient temp will make a difference.

That does seem kind of high.

According to NHC my harddrive temps are: idle/41c....load/47c <---edited correction(boots up at 31c and climbs to 41c idle after sitting for a couple of hours)

On a side note my cpu temps are: idle/51c....load/67-71c

Also, if it helps, I run my system in Quiet Office Mode while doing low cpu intensive task, then I switch it to Gaming for games, and High Performance for everything else, dvd burning etc...(don't know what effect this has if any, I've only had my machine for a week, still learning).

Under regular use, i.e. DVD or gaming, up to 60 is completely normal. Just be sure to use the notebook on a flat surface to keep the intake vents underneath clear, and you'll be fine. HDs warm up when they are being used, thus the difference in temps between startup and after continued use.

    Is it a 5400 or 7200 drive?

W3j only comes with a 5400rpm hd, but your hd temp. is 60 degrees celcius seems to be higher the average. If you turn it on for a long time, probably, you have to put a cooling base on the bottom.

Thanks a lot for your input guys.

My W3J is in a bookshelf in an empty shelf. The room temp is about 28 at the moment because its summer here now. I am thinking about lifting it up a bit, so that air would run trough better. But still seems weird that when its on a flat surface and it still running hot. Its been now on for 4 hours and the temp is 50 celcius. another 4 hours and its up at 56 celcius. Overnight it would be at 60 celcius. My HD is 80GB 5400rpm.

Whats your longest uptime atm? mine is 16 hours. Didnt have the guts to keep it on for longer.

Btw, when on desktop use, I run my W3J at full juice all the time.

You should consider getting a cooling pad for your notebook, it will help your hard drive temperature and overall system temperature. Vantec makes great pads, check www.newegg.com.

That is a fuji mhv 100gb drive in there. They get up to the 60C mark no problem. This is very normal. Same temp you will find with seagate or hitachi. Dont worry. Watching the same drives over the last few years time and time again reveals they will hit 60C xept w.d. which stays a bit cooler for some reason.
