I' Love my W3J to death however i'm getting very sick of the constant fan cycling. heres the scoop:

Fan turns on (or spins up in rpm to a noise that is noticable and bothersome) at 59 degrees(CPU). It then stays on until the temp drops back to 51 degrees. It does this in an endless cycle.

Does anyone else have this problem???

Heres what i've tried, putting AS5 on the GPU and CPU, casue the temp to rise a bit slower and once the fan turns on it drops the temp quicker. It still doesn't get rid of the problem.

I"ve also done some testing by taking the fan OUT of the unit and then using it. The temp slowly rises to 68 degrees and then sits there (power play activated, listening to mp3's browsing the web)

Whats somewhat frustrating is the Z62F that I have, has NEVER actually turned the fan on during use. Its running a T2300, as far as I can tell the fans are the same [only difference 6130C(W3J) 6120C(Z62F)]

The Z62F only gets to a cpu temp of 52 degrees dual prime 95 and 3dmark looping. I realize that there is integrated graphics on that laptop, but would the Bios on that laptop turn the fan on at higher/lower temps.

    Some testing I've done:

    W3J fan speeds and temperatures:

    0-58 Degrees = Off
    59-68 = On "Low Speed"
    69+ = "High Speed"

I then swapped fans and took the fan from my Z62F with the exact same results, and same noise levels meaning the fans are EXACTLY the same between the 2 notebooks.

The difference is probably the BIOS on the W3J spinning the fan up to a higher RPM VS the Z62F somewhat expected although the noise IMO is unacceptable.

The Z62F On the other hand has the fans turned off until 53 degrees. At which point the fan comes on at a much reduced rpm vs the W3J and there is no audible noise.

SO my guess is that the fan speed is programmed into the BIOS and unless someone writes a custom BIOS nothing is going to be done about it.

    Any input would be great.

If you're running any monitoring or modding software, I'd say uninstall that first and see if you still notice the fans acting strangely. I've hard a lot of cases where the programs interact poorly with the actually fan RPMs.

I have tried using speedfan however the W3J is unsupported i've also tested with and without programs such as notebook hardware control and RMClock

I definitely have the same cycle goin on and tried a while ago to fix it. It does seem like the fan rpm could be raised a little to combat the heat more effectively. I couldn't fix the problem entirely but I did buy a cooling pad which keeps the cpu around 52. Try underclocking the gpu or using powerplay to reduce the heat a little further. The thing is - since I have the cooling pad on, it drowns out the fan of the w3j (the fan only will come on during gaming)

I hear you on the cooling pad, got one myself :D works great when i'm at home, but the biggest issue with the fan noise is taking the notebook to school. Even when i'm just typing or idling away the temp will slowly creep up to 59 and then the fan comes on, and it is heard by other people around me in the lecture hall. I'm using NHC to lock the cpu @ 1ghz (0.95v) and have the gpu underclocked big time. I might just have to search for someone willing to disect the bios and see if theres anything that can be done that way.

Its not really that bad although it is enough to be noticeable, don't get me wrong I love this machine to death however I think that some tweaks to the fan speed could make it better. Like I reference in my 1st post my Z62F fan comes on @ 52c but at a much reduced rpm and you can't hear it.

I know becasue everything is powerful (Core Duo, X1600) and in a small spot compromises have to be made, i'm not ready to give up yet.

If the fan was to come on at a reduced rpm vs what it does now it would be fine.

Small update, i've purchased some extra fans and a spare cover (THe asus estore) for the bottom of the laptop. I'm going to have a friend put a resistor on the fan so that the fan will spin up at a slower rpm to combat the noise problem. I"m also going to be taking a dremel and tastfully make a nice vent right under the fan.

I"m also going to see if it would be possible to put a variable resistor on the fan and then mount it in a spot where I could just use a screw driver to turn the resistor and adjust fan speed on the fly.

These measures seem extreme but seems to be the only way I can get rid of this stupid noise from the fan.

Once I get this done i'll be posting pictures and a how-to guide

This is very strange, I've had my W3J for 10 days now and the fan is almost inaudible to the point where I thought it wasn't working. Even when it's on High Performance I can barely hear it. You might have a manufacturing issue.

Silvr6 : I suggest you should take off the bottom of your laptop. Than you will see that CPU and GPU are connected to the same radiator which means that not only CPU is responsible for fans but also GPU. I will risk statement that it's X1600 which generate much more heat than CPU.

Aren't there 3rd party fans you can get like "Silentfan" or something that are designed better and more quiet?

I will be purchasing a W3j soon so I am interested in the fan noise...what is the general consensus...is the w3j quiet or noisy?

Yes the X1600 is on the same heatpipe as the cpu, and I do agree that it puts out more power than the cpu.

As for the the fan issue, it could be possible that their could just be a problem with the unit I got, however swapping on other fans didn't solve the problem so i'm pretty sure its Bios related.

I should be working on it this weekend

My W3J is whisper quiet, even when I am abusing it's GPU and CPU horridly. (Dual monitors, running Guild Wars on one, Empire at War on the other, full settings each).

It gets warm, and yes the fan does ramp up, but it's neither loud nor obnoxious.

Now if you heard my 50+ decible desktop rig, you'd forget your laptop 'fan noise' problem in a heartbeat :)

It's generally quiet...the only time it's not "quiet" is if you're playing games and your wife is trying to watch a show quietly because the baby is sleeping...then it's loud enough for her to complain about, but quiet nonetheless.
