I've been noticing that, even when my system sits idle... the fan is on and making the "fanning" sound, heat is being produced from the right side vents, etc.

    Is this normal?

yah it is- there is nothing wrong with it. If it bothers you then get a cooler but then the cooler fan is much louder than the latop fan. The w3j can withstand heat up to like 100C or somethign ridiculus so a little heat is nothing to be afraid of. I can still use the w3j on my lap normally without any discomfort. But for desk use i have a cooler- (the heat kinda bothered me at first)- In retrospect I probably wouldnt have bought the cooler but in the first few weeks of owning the w3j I wanted everything to be perfect. I don't think the cooler is needed tho but it is up to you.

That's a new term for me... The cpu is making heat as long as the system is on and that heat and transfered down the heatpipe and then into the radiator fins.... the fan blows over those fins to push the heat out of the system...... so that's normal and you WANT that.. You may be idling with a high cpu speed...... use the power4gear button and scale down to quiet office or something like that and then you'll be at less than half the maximum speed which will cut the performance.... and therefore the heat... and therefore the fan speed ... and so on... which means less noise.

Hey Justin could you explain the settings of Power4Gear a little? I tried looking them up in the definitions within the program itself but they were ... lacking. If you could just sorta say what each actually does that would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, it's sorta limiting (NHC - notebook hardware control) is similiar but for an advanced user - but each setting sorta has difference options... the first two are full cpu... the last two are like 800-900mhz....... and inbetween the step up and down... you can't change the cpu settings for each one - but you can change power saving features and backlights and things like this... but the super performance and high performance is full cpu... and the quiet office and email are the lower cpu settings...... if you're just doing interrnet, email and word - I'd leave it on the lower side..... especially if you want it to be quiet for say a school lecture or something...... you'd probably be using word or something anyway.

Youre lucky my POS toshiba p105 fan hardly ever came on, the system would overheat and shutdown by itself.

oh.. well that just means you didn't follow through with your windows install and miss the drivers.... like power4gear... so get out your drivers disc and install it!
