Hm... my W3J (purchased in June 2006) doesn't have that program and I don't remember those processes being there. Then again, I don't worry too much as I'm not trying to run Vista.

I have never heard of the TPM thing until this thread. I have no icon tray and have never seen mention of it.... Strange.

I am not sure why people are having problems installing on their W3Js?? I installed Vista fine with no hacks or issues at all. Just a normal install.

I think there are different variants of W3J. My set doesn't even have TPM at all...Even when trying to install the software for TPM from Asus in WinXP, it prompts me TPM not found.

And...no...there isn't any option for TPM in the bios for me.

Guess that's causing the big problem for some of us.

We need to get this straightened out if indeed it is TPM whats causing this problem.

    To figure it out:
For those that installed Vista fine, which version is it, the core duo 1.83, core duo 2.0, or the core 2 duo? Do you have TPM, if so did you initialize it?

I have the core duo 1.83 W3J, however I had to use the bootloader hack in order to install Vista because without the hack my W3J went into a boot loop. So I'm assuming that my W3J has a TPM because the hack bypasses calls to the TPM.

d12, you have an older one correct? I guess that screws that theory about the TPM then.... or does it, can you put in your w3j driver cd and browse it (not the auto start menu) and browse to the TPM folder and try and install it?

i would estimate that asus will release drivers for vista in about 6-8 weeks. I bought a hp vista ready computer and the "express" upgrade will be shipped 6-8 weeks including and drivers needed for the install. If this is the case then i think asus will do the same.

Yes, i have first gen model W3J.
I tried installing the TPM software that I downloaded from the vista drivers list on this forum, however when i try to install the program it says that the TPM is not found. So again i'm guessing that the bootloader hack disables access to the TPM.

Sigh....doesn't Asus know about the products they produce....=/

Yes, they do. But think about it. It isn't even a whole product model. Just part of it. They already sold them. They never promised you vista would run on it. Not to be mean or put words in their mouth, but how much do they care or even need to care? Probably not too much. I mean, how many of these things do they really sell compared to places like dell, hp, etc.

As long as Asus chose to put the Windows Vista Capable sticker, it's my opinion that they should be forced to... well... make the computers Windows Vista capable. I'm not sure if the early models did or not but hopefully the early models will be compatible with the software and firmware for newer models which do have the stickers identifying them as Windows Vista Capable.

on another note, havand, are you saying that later models of the w3j are working fine with vista? if so which (processor and TPM chip)

well do they have all 3 versions of the w3j running vista? Maybe you should email them telling them why some can run vista fine and others need a boot hack, is it the tpm or what...

what worries me the most about this is the inconsistancy. i am very hesitant to run vista on a laptop that doesn't always work. due to the inconsistancy, asus might do less to fix it, especially if they've already got one working. didn't one of the vendors on here say that they were going to contact asus about this issue?

I was able to install Ultimate without any problems but I'm having trouble getting the sound to work...

Anyone know if you can use one product key that you get with a comp on multiple computers?

My biggest headaches came from trying to get the sound to work. This is where you get the drivers from:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=101151

run the asus installer for it and then your volume buttons will work

    UPDATE:

I just did an install of Windows Vista Business without having to use any bootloader hack! ****, I shoulda install Vista without the hack in the first place to see if I have the same problems as other W3J users.

I purchased my W3J from MWave.com.au. They shipped me a North American W3J.

    I have the following specifications:

    Core Duo T2500
    2x 1GB 667 DDR2 RAM
    100GB 5400 HDD

I have removed the hidden recovery partition. Have two partitions, NTFS on both.

I should stop reading this forum... the amount of problems are 0 for me so far for W3J - No restarting loop, no crashes due to drivers, no problems due to waking up from Standby, etc.

    I LOVE MY W3J!!!

    Oh, 210 BIOS! :D :D :D

I very much doubt that since I you would be doing is upgrading your cpu and updating your bios. It looks like the problem has something to do with TPM.

It looks like the core duo 1.83 versions do not have TPM, do the core duo 2.0 versions do?

    Well d12
i suggest you at least to wait for new updates, not to go far as it to change your cpu only for run vista, Vista is hot, yeah everybody know that, but for the moment there not alot application that can be run on this OS..Im sure your xp run great . keep it like that and wait for the update so you can upgrade with still your t2400 on board.

Unless your ambition is to go with fast cpu, like gaming or whatever take the t7200... but not only an option for uprading to vista.

And don't forget that yout t2400 is 32bit (x86) and support only 32bit vista

and that the t7200 C2D is 32-64bit compatible

because some of people think that he absolutely need a 64bits processor to run vista..he dont know that vista support 32bit cpu
    have a good day

    Select SECURITY Tab from BIOS.

    Then find:

    TPM Security.

    Then toggle to Disable/Enable.

So can we conclude that W3J with TPM disabled is able to install VISTA?

W3J with TPM enabled is able (or maybe not) to install VISTA?

W3J with no TPM is not able to install VISTA?

    Or is it just luck?

    Perhaps thats the problem. I haven't tried installing vista on my W3j yet, I have the C2D refresh version. Under the security tab in bios I also see an option to disable TPM. Perhaps the first generation W3js did not come with the option to turn it off which is why people are having so many problems with it? =.=;;

i don't think the first gen w3j have TPM in them. If you look at the sticker that shows all the specs next to the HDD spec it should say 100gb+TPM. if you look up the the review for the second gen W3J or W3J+ you'll notice that the stick indicates TPM.

Looking at my BIOS again, I don't have a TPM option. I take it I have the H017P model based on my laptop's specs (1.83GHz Core Duo, 2x512MB DDR2, etc).

Not a big deal; I'm not trying to install Vista anyway, just wanted to know if I had a TPM module in my machine.
