    Gidday guys.

I am interested to know if anybody has upgraded their standard Fujitsu 100G 5400rpm drive to the Seagate Momentus 5400.3. If so did you REALLY notice any diffence in speed and battery life or is it just advertising hype? The only definite improvement I guess is the 160G size.

    Regards to all.

I will be getting one in a couple of weeks. There are review and tests that show that this particular drive is faster than standard 5400 drives. Whether it will be noticible to you is questionable. Some may not even know the difference between a 5400rpm and a 7200 rpm, it dependes on what your doing. It may speed up load times for games for example.

I just bought one of those drives myself but for external use. I might consider swapping out the other hd later but for my uses now its pretty darn fast. NZwaverider has actually swapped them and he said that his bootup time decreased to 30 sec and his overall performance improved. He will prolly pipe up sometime in response to this thread so I apologize for beating him to it haha.

Hard drives in general will only have a little to no effect on battertylife.

However, if one was to go from a 5400rpm to a 7200rpm hard drive, there will be a noticable difference.

If one went from a 5400rpm to a 5400rpm perpendicular or a much bigger hard drive with more space clustered. There should be a slight increase in performance, however it may not be noticable.

Seagate hard drive tend to by very quiet and relatively cool.

Thanks mate, that link was very informative, and pretty well answered all my questions. Seems like the Seagate Perpendicular drives (Ultra ATA) are not that much faster than my stock Fujitsu, and do in fact consume a bit more power, which I am sure everyone agrees on a notebook is not such a great thing!

On a different note, I must say I find it very interesting that reading the ASUS forum, there are still a heck of a lot of people out there who are still trying to get hold of an ASUS W3J without success, and the new Core 2 Duo model is not that far away. Did ASUS not actually build that many initially, or have they just been a huge seller? We are only just seeing the originals in OZ now, I have had mine for 6 weeks and it was one of the first in the country.
