Hey i just received my w3j and i have over 50 processes going on at startup, i did remove some stuff that i know i didnt need but i dont know what most stuff is. What can i remove from starting at startup? Also is the vista version going to have the same bloatware and stuff or is it going to be cleaner?

It's all preference. Try expanding the "command" column and associate each process with a program. If it's something you like having on startup, let it be. If not, uncheck it. You can type any of the process names into Google to find out exactly what they are if you can't figure it out. A few I got rid of are the Asus updater (useless), Adobe reader launcher, and Nero. I can't say what you'll want to get rid of but trial and error here is key. When you install Vista, many of the most important (necessary) processes will change but the minor annoying ones should be maintained through the upgrade - i.e. if you have a process disabled now, it won't be added or enabled upon upgrade, but any new programs installed may add some new processes so watch for that.

Also, what is this thing called Infineon Security Platform, how does it work, it looks like i need to initialize it? How do i remove it? It doesn't appear under startup programs in Win Defender.

If you're using an upgrade CD, you can't do a clean install anyway so the point is sorta moot unless you have a full copy. In that case, none of the included Asus apps will be startup processes and you should be left with only those which are important to Vista. If you do a good job cleaning out your startup processes in XP and then upgrading, the difference between the two options should be negligible.

That's what's called a " trusted platform module" and it's essentially a "feature" which only has practical use for business users (and even there its use is debatable). The idea behind "trusted computing" is fairly controversial but to summarize things, a home user has virtually no need for it and you don't need to worry about it. If you want to keep it from giving you pop-ups, uninstall the driver from the device manager and any related software from the control panel. If you then get "found new hardware" alerts, pop the drivers disc in and have the device manager search for the driver on the disc (do not install the driver from the menu options as this will reinstall the annoying software). You'll have the driver reinstalled but won't have any of the annoying Infineon software bugging you and adding another program running in the background.

actually, i still need help. There are no pop ups concerning the TPM thingy but i would like to get rid of it. At start up there are like 5 processes concerning that device and i have an icon on the tray. I tried what you said about going to the device manager, all i see is Infineon trusted platform module, so i uninstall then it asks me to restart, then at startup it says "your new hardware was installed" then i need to restart again, looks like the drivers are installed again by themselves.
    hope you can help.

Ugh, that program was such a pain. Since I reformatted my HD clean and chose to install only what I wanted, I didn't have to really worry about it. My experience comes from using the computer for a couple of days before reformatting. The primary places to look for anything related to it are the add/remove programs list (my guess is you've already looked here), the device manager (which you've already dealt with) and the BIOS which has an option to disable the TPM - it's off by default. Just to be clear, after you uninstalled the driver, you restarted, it found the "new device" auto-installed its drivers again and hasn't prompted you since, right?

The problem could be how you're trying to get rid of it - after uninstalling in DM it sounds like on bootup the OS finds the part again and then will always do the reinstall because it thinks it's been newly added since shutdown.

Go into msconfig.exe, see if there are any tpm/infineon boxes there and uncheck them, then restart... this will disable the tpm processes on startup and at the same time avoid the device reinstall issue that you're experiencing (because the OS will still see it there, just doesn't start the software to run it).

Am i correct in assuming that those who bought later generation W3J's which include this TPM chip from infineon are free from issues installing Vista? and if so, is there anyway of having one added to my earlier model?

There are specific Vista drivers you can install should you chose to on a Vista W3J with a TPM card. It's not something you can add after-market as far as I know.

Are you sure the older models didn't include it? It's not all that new so double check your device manager to see if it's mentioned there under system devices.
