I decided to install the Vista bet 2 on my W3J.The installation was going smoothly until it rebooted; now my notebook is rebooting continuosly non-stop, it gets stuck at the black screen with flashing white cursor and reboots again. :O I don't know what to do, I'm guessing it's not booting form the partition I installed Vista on? I tried to use my recovery partition(by pressing F9 during start-up) and nothing happened, I used the recovery disc supplied with the notebook and chose the option to delete the primary partition and re-install Windows while leaving the rest intact(D, where I installed Vista and the smaller recovery partition) but it finished the installation and kept on rebooting :O I'm so confused! Is there a way to a) finish the Vista installation or b) finish the recovery disc installation without loosing my recovery partition(re-installation using the partition takes only four minutes compared to roughly one hour thirty using the discs)?
edit: I used a burnt DVD if that helps![]()
I don't what to do; If I use the recovery discs and choose to delete the partitions and create two new ones is there a way one can create a recovery partition from the recovery discs????

Okay I used the recovery discs again and chose the "Recover Windows XP to entire HD with 2 partition" option and nothing has changed: used the first CD then the second and the driver CD and after it completes the pre-installation it gets stuck on the Asus screen and keeps on rebooting.
Sigh! I'll call Asus later today.....

can you get access to the bios?
also unless you choose to do something like say a low level format of the whole hdd...you wont loose the hidden partition...so my advice is reformat and re-install....maybe check the bios too and make sure something hasnt been changed there!

Try reformatting... and if you cant get through reformats without reboots/crashes then there might be some sort of heat problem.. or faulty ram...

The problem again is the multiple partitions. You have to format the drive. The asus recovery disk which i have not tried recently may do it. Using a retail or oem win cd you can delete both partitions and make one unpartitioned space. Once you have that you can restart with the recovery disk and i believe the option that installs on one partition.

If you have data on the second partition I would back it up just to be safe.
I was reinstalling (98, then XP) windows on my old laptop with a partitioned drive first and second time, everything was ok just reformated first partition, third time (changing it back to 2K) it re-formatted the entire drive loosing my partition.
Just a warning. -
@Kal - you don't need to reformat, I have an A8Jm, same problem
Grab a ligit win XP CD & get into the recovery section & run fixboot, then fixmbr
This problem is because Vista uses a completely new booting method to XP, & for some reason it dies on A8Jm's & apparently W3J too. I have posted about this in the A8Jm owners lounge thread.
I hope a fix is found, I want Vista too.... -
Thanks a lot! -
Okay I just used a normal XP pro disc for a cleant install and used the recovery discs after I finished. It's now at with the factory OS + utilities but somethings not right:
Bluetooth was already installed(wasn't like this when I got the W3J for the first time), there isn't any Asus splendid technology(pressing the button doesn't change anything) and it seems that the Intel Wireless/Pro software doesn't exist. Nero Express isn't installed either(I know I have the disc but I was just wondering why it wasn't installed since it was there when I used the recovery partition a while ago) ??? I'm confused. -
hey kal, i have a w3j and i get the same problem as u when i tried to install windows vista beta 2. It just keeps rebooting and after i realized that i can't even boot into my windows xp anymore. So i ended up reformating a couple of times.
The splendid technology drivers are located on your w3j driver cd that came with the package. Or you can download them from asus's website under their utilities.
The Intel wireless/pro drivers can be downloaded from intel's website, it's also on the cd and on asus's website as well. -
and everything is perfect; just like new except for the Nero suite which I installed myself. Thank God!!!
I am free! I'm busy installing all the software I had on the comp before I installed Vista....I can finally play Oblivion tomorrow!!!
Thanks everyone! -
I get mine tomorrow and plan on setting up a dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu Linux. So, any tips?
W3J rebooting incessantly! Vista!!!!
