So i bought a battery from hong kong that said it was compatible with my w3j, but it doesn't fit. one of the attachment mechanisms is slightly different. Did I get sent a battery for a different w3 variant? can I just modify the attachment so that it fits in the laptop> or is there more different on the inside. All the voltage and other numbers match my old battery.

I wouldn't recommend doing modifications to the battery. If it is Asus branded, please do post the part number, so I can verify compatibility.
If it is aftermarket, you might want to check if the manufacturer has a website and verify the part number compatibility there. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Yes, you did. The earlier W3V and W3A series used a different battery than the W3j (the connections were different on that last model, it wasn't just the color change). Any listings online that state compatibility across all W3 notebooks are incorrect.
As HK is where a lot of older Asus battery listings originate @ Ebay, I'm guessing you bought there? If so, contact the seller regarding incompatibility and their inaccurate listing, and progress to opening a dispute @ Paypal if needed. -
I contacted the reseller, and ya it was ebay. Thanks for the prompt reply. The new battery model number is a42-w3, where as the old one is a42-w3j. I realized that that the older models had different connectors but with the matching color scheme I figured this was what I was looking for. No such luck.
heres the ebay listing in all its broken english glory:

edit:
ya the battery is made by asus as far as I can tell -
