Just out of curiosity does anyone know whether the W3J comes with 1X 1 gb stick or 2X 512 mb sticks? According to PROPortable.com, new core duo laptops set for release in early March will come with one stick.

Since the begining, all ENSEMBLE laptops came with one stick(When the default was 512mb), since the 1gb default, it has been increased to two sticks.

I'm pretty sure it will be 1 stick, as the V6j has 1 stick of 667mhz ram IIRC.

When Asus ordered the new models I complained about the use of two sticks because it limits customers ultimate upgradability and the performance of "dual channel" is better aimed at a customer that upgrades to 2gb, than straight out of the box. Asus acknowledged the small boost dual channel actually gives and did order the V6j in 1 x 1gb.... the W2 is the same, I know that..... the W3 should be as well.

Will it void the warranty if you add another stick?

It shouldn't but if you ever need to send an ENSEMBLE unit in, just remember to remove the extra RAM :)

Just how big is the performance impact of running in dual channel?

In the real world of home computing, you would see it on a bench with something like SiSoftware Sandra...it's obviously something that marketing loves, and it'll keep popping up.

The real world impact of Duo core and HT before is something within reality, IMO.

I think he meant dual channel, not dual core. Dual channel doesn't have much noticeable impact with most programs. The memory bandwidth needs to be near bottleneck for dual channel to have an advantage.

They are. My first comment pertained to dual channel; the second to the newer Core duo/multiple cores and HT. I needed to be clearer, certainly for you.
