I've noticed that on my W3J that if I dim the screen all the way down that the left half of my screen is noticebly darker than the right half of my screen. One setting up from dimmest it seems normal and uniform. Is this an additional way for the screen to save battery by only using one backlight or is there a problem with my screen? Thanks!!!

If the computer contains a cheap LCD, then it's to be expected and uneven backlight is very common on these. But if it uses a high quality display, then yours is defective and needs replacing. It all depends on what screen they've used.

So it's supposed to do that? Cool I feel better knowing that mine is not "defective" I would hate to have to send it in!!!

To adjust the brightness and darkness will affect the battery life. Definitely, it is not a defective LCD issue. Try to see the difference when you use a battery and AC adapter to take the power, and check the Power schemes' option. Make sure that they relate this issue.
    Cheers

It also could have something to do with the vertical viewing angles of 14" lcds, they are all bad

Yeah mine is also the same, but I had a flight from the US to UK a few weeks ago and I had the screen on the lowest setting and you dont nitice it as much, I was even running on mains, but when all the lights are out your eyes adjust to the ambient light and anything above the lowest setting was too bright (I just had to keep my hand over the LED's) like others have said if the room is completely dark it is not very noticable.
