    Guys,

I currently own a 2.4 P4 desktop supported by an Nvidia 5700LE and 1Gig of 333Mhz ram. Believe it or not the thing will still run games like Doom3 but didn't seem to be able to run something like FEAR, at least based on loading a free demo disk.

I'm not an avid gamer BUT I do like to spend some time gaming from time to time, hence my interest in X1600 with the W3J being the a front-runner due to build quality and rave reviews.

So my rather strange question is : How does the W3J compare to my desktop?
Note that I have NO idea what my PC 3dMark numbers are nor do I have the patience to find out.

    Looking forward to your responses.

    Tom

It's certainly going to out perform it...... by how much.... that's another story, but by a lot. CPU wise, a 2.0 core duo is going to perform like a 3.6 P4 w/ HT at the very least..... You won't see a huge jump in performance because of the faster ram, but there certainly is an increase there as well. In terms of graphics, comparing desktop to laptop models are often very difficult, but coming from a 5700 desktop, the x1600 is certainly as good, but I do believe is better.

... in other words, if you want to move to a laptop and have something better than your desktop in a much smaller package.... it's a can't miss.

Yep, theres going to be a difference, a big difference. The X1600 is a newer card than the 5700LE, and will be a much better performer. You don't need a seriosly fast Core Duo either. Core Duo are more than fast enough, so even a 1.83 Ghz, or 1.66 Ghz model will suffice.

    Thanks guys,

    Some follow ups:

Out of curiosity only, is the 5700LE a 64 bit card? 16 bit? I've read comparisons of the x1600 with the Nvidia 6800, which I know is a real strong card. I have to laugh that the latter is considered "old" and now bargain basement technololgy already.

Do these "Omega Drivers" I've come across run the risk of voiding a warranty for the machine? Or worse yet, possibly causing heat damage?

How about screen tearing with motion? I'm not expecting miracles, but I have a Dell D610 from work which has very severe response lag (of course this machine isn't meant for anything graphically intense).

I'm VERY surprised by the comparison to a P4 3.6; I seriously would not have though this to be the case.

the p4 3.6 is not a real comparison, p4 3.6 is single and cd is dual core

in single thread, p4 would win.

in dual thread, cd would win

in games, not much of a difference

Correcting above poster, P4 3.6GHz is NOT dual core. Hyperthreading is very different from having two full cores, and performance measures accordingly. That said, your shiny new Core Duo will spank your old P4.

Omega Drivers won't damage your machine or void the warranty; I was using them on my last laptop without a problem.

Tearing can be avoided by just turning on vSync. I have yet to see a modern notebook that doesn't have a screen sufficient for gaming.

The 5700LE has a 64-bit memory bus, severely crippling it. The X1600 has a 128-bit memory bus and will vastly outperform the 5700LE. It's not even remotely close.
