    Well I 've finally ordered my first laptop, a W3J with T7200 CPU, 2GB (2 x 1024MB) RAM, 100GB 7200rpm hardrive, X1600 etc etc...

So I'm pretty excited and I can't wait until this thing is sitting on my doorstep so I can rip open the box and get a look at this gorgeous machine. So that's all well and good, but what am I actually posting?

Well I would greatly appreciate people's wisdom on how to get this bad boy to perform as well as it looks. I've started compiling a folder with links and files ive already downloaded which will be necessary to get this unit up to scratch. So far I've downloaded the X1600 BIOS fix, and I've looked into how I should check that my OS is correctly configured to support dual cores. But what other things should i check? What bloatware is necessary and what is just going to slow me down?

A great big thank-you in advance to all who help me out.

    Cheers,
    Kieran

well luckily asus notebooks done seem to come with much bloatware.... first thing i took off was norton IS.

Then disabled the, asus liveupdate, nero check, ALCMTR, PDVDserv, asus , system monitor utility, power 4 gear (use NHC instead).

I'm sure you can find some other services to disable.....

but you can start with these. I chose to get to them by going to RUN then msconfig then click the [startup tab]

You can go over the list again after you've installed all the programs you;re going to use on it. like msn, real player, java runtime, quicktime etc etc, those all have annoying system tray icons that start up even if you dont ask for it.

thanks insane for ur comments. Good to know that asus doesnt punish you with all that waste of space. Does anyone know of any other problems to check for other than the graininess and dual core compatability? thanks to all...

Hi pitch_white, noticed you are located in Australia. Just wondering where did you order the W3J, and how much did it cost you?

    Hey,
    I ordered my W3J from:

    www.p4laptops.com.au

You can also get it from:

    www.affordablelaptops.com.au

When i got my first quote from p4laptops they said $3792.00. But affordable laptops could get it for me for $3606.00. So i showed this to p4laptops and they bettered the price for me for $3575.00 (plus they had all the parts in stock while affordable laptops had no ETA on parts i wanted)

But another website, itchoice.com.au (i think), also had the w3j and they also had the price beater feature. So i imagine you could show them the $3575.00 and they would better it. Then you could go back to p4laptops and they might try to beat that price...he he he...until you get to a wholesale plus marginal profit price...or close to it. (i.e. pit them against eachother in an all out price war)...

Or you could just claim it as a salary sacrifice under the FBT and make a 40% saving...plus the gst reimbursed by your employer. (also if you're still living at home with your folks send me an email and i can give you a little more info to help your dollar go that little bit further)

sorry to all who've read my previous post and were possibly confused as to why i still went with p4laptops...i wrote that they bettered the price to $3757.00, however, I meant to write $3575.00 (cheaper than affordablelaptops.com's quote). I've subsequently edited that error.

Id suggest avast over what comes with the asus laptop as far as antivirus, its great, free, and takes up very little resources

    Thanks gatordude123.

Currently I use AVG on my desktop as my antivirus. How do you guys find that that compares with avast? I guess I would be asking that it terms of protection ability mainly, but also in terms of how much of a resource hog it is. Thanks again to all.

Ive used norton in the past and hated the fact that it ate up system resources. When i got my w3j, I decided to try AVG free edition and it seems to be working great so far with minimal resource use. Ive never used AVAST or Bitdefender or any of the others so I cant comment on those.

Oh and you also check the sticky on the getting the graininess fixed :)
