If anyone could tell me where I could purchase a w3j with a core 2 duo processor it would be much appreciated. If not yet available does anyone have a ballpark estimate of when they will become available?

The Asus W3j will not have merom for a while now, it has not been refreshed as of yet. Estimates by resellers such a milestone, along with others, estimate mid-late October. Asus always takes their sweet time from what I've heard.

eh its with the lower version T5500 too...better to grab a t2500 version now (if still available) and upgrade later..not worth the wait for just the 2MB cache version IMO

mid to late October will be about the time they start rolling in, mid November before anyone will be able to have everyday stock for the casual shopper.

The way I tell our sales guys to put it, 64bit is a big advancement in cpus, but most people will be buying a new computer in 3 years before they're effected with software that will truly benefit. Most developers have held off on true 64bit versions of their software until both intel gets their models released and microsoft gets their 64bit version of vista out... Given the transition time for consumers, it'll be a couple years before hardcore software that could really use 64bit even comes out.

So, although you could get either one, over the course of ownership, you're unlikely to see any benefit, so it's really up to you, but you can't lose either way.

Thanks, it seems like it could be atleast 3 years before there is a true benefit. 99% are still buying 32bit systems right now, so there would need to be a dramatic shift to 64bit apps right now for it to become a standard in less than 5 years. I'll go with the w3j. Should do me well.

If Vista was coming out in only 64bit - I'd say 32bit is dead.. but it's coming in 32 and 64.

no. Microsoft will be dead. 32 will stay, and apple will take over the market.
No one's going to buy a new 64 cpu just to use vista.

I hope this was a joke...... No kidding... All I said was that if Micrsoft was to so boldly go and make Vista only as a 64bit platform.....thus, rendering all intel systems older than July of 06 and pretty much all AMD models older than a few years - obselete..... However, that's not what they're doing. I was just making a point that if that was what they were doing - it would obviously make no sense at all to buy a current system - or to have even bought a system within the last year or so if Vista was something you'd want to be upgrading to. Since that isn't that case - which it obviously should be in the first place - then most people won't have a need or see any special performance increase simply because they have a 64bit cpu...... and even with a 64bit windows...... without 64bit software to run on that 64bit OS - it really doesn't mean jack.

......good point though... I don't think Micrsoft will be dead..... with all the money Gates poured into apple when they were about to go under, I think it's just a matter of time before he gets that back with more microsoft involvement on macs or maybe even in hardware...

mid november... :( I hope that it's not the case here in Australia...but it's almost likely to be that...or worse.

Mind you ive contacted 3 companies over here:

    p4laptops
    affordable laptops
    laptop choice

and they have told me that they will be expecting the w3j within 2-3 weeks or so. And the z96jb has already come out over here is Australia with the core 2 duo. And ive been told all asus that these companies have will go core 2. So im assuming that it will happen ...and that is with teh 7200 as an option...the minimum 4mb package i believe...

i hope i havent been misleaded...the wait is killing me.

(i want my little beast now!!!)

    Is this information false then?

    Also found this:

I was more or less convinced, after considering the W1J and the W2J, to buy the ASUS V1J, but then the W3J weight and 14'' screen are also really attractive pros.

Gee, I really don't know. Almost every reseller and the Asus website has no notification of any W3J with Merom, but that website looks very convincing. Still, I don't trust it as much as I trust the resellers.
