There isn't a second optical drive......... the bay where the optical drive is in is removable and in that bay, you can place a 2nd hard drive kit or a 2nd battery pack, or the blank drawer that came with your unit....... either way, you're going to be taking out the optical drive to do so.

sorry i meant bay not drive, so i need to take out the ONLY CD/DVD drive if i want a 2nd battery?

There's a slider-switch on the bottom of the laptop to unlock the drive. Just unlock it and pull it out.

Is the DVD drive and 2nd battery drive hot-swappable?
-
From what I found, you can boot up with DVD drive and swap to the battery while in OS just fine... and you can keep swapping while in the same session, just not the other way around. If you boot with 2nd battery, you'll have to restart with DVDRW in for it to detect in OS...

It should be...at least the removal of the cd drive is...you should see a remove hardware icon in the task bar for that....but not 100% sure on the install of the battery.

^^^damm you beat me too it ^^^ -
I have both the optical bay battery and HDD, I have swapped HDD DVD and battery all witout having to power down.
The only thing I do is click on the "safely remove hardware" icon on the task bar when removing HDD and DVD drive.
I think every laptop shoud have a multibay, they are great and add massively to the versatility of a laptop. -
Did you ever boot up with the battery and swap to your optical drive ok?
-
So essentially yes it works, and I have never a problem, I switch between HDD DVD and battery quite often when travelling.
The only time you have a problem is if you do not use the "safely remove hardware" wizard, because if you just remove the DVD drive and re-insert it, it will not reconize the drive, when removing the DVD or HDD you must use the "safely remove hardware" icon on the task bar.
As another test I removed the DVD (without using the "safely remove hardware" icon) and re-inseted, it does not recognise the drive, even if I eject and put a new DVD in, and it dosent appear in windows explorer. and I just inserted the HDD after and it does not recognise that either, it seems if you just pull out the DVD without safely removing it, it disables that port, which will require a reboot to reset.
So... morale of the storey....if you use the "safely remove hardware" icon everything will work perfectly.
It would be great to have a travel case for the HDD kit & DVD rom when they are out of the bay, because when you remove the HDD kit the top of the drive is exposed and could easily be damaged.
ps: you do not have to use the remove hardware icon when removing battery, only when you are removing HDD or DVD. -
Awesome... thanks for the info!
