I've mainly used a wireless connection with my w3j, but over the past month when I'm at home I've started using a wired connection(because when playing games sometimes the wireless would drop).

This morning I booted up the machine, and theres no wired connection. First thing I did was reboot my router, modem, and laptop...nothing.

Next I checked to make sure it wasn't a bad cable, or port on my router. I ruled that out using another pc.

Also I noticed that theres an option for the system to turn off the card if the power is low, this was enabled, and the last time I used my machine it was on battery. So I disabled that function and rebooted the machine while being plugged in...still nothing

I've just uninstalled the realtek driver, and reinstalled using the one from the Asus website(which is probably the same driver). Still, its saying "network cable unplugged".

Any ideas of what I can do at this point?

Once the cable is plugged in on both ends , even if no signal as long as the cable is right the message should go away. The fastest way to check it would be to make another partition and restore windows onto it. Probably the fastest way to rule out software issue without tinkering around with drivers for hours. check to see if maybee the pins in the port are bent. possibly something stuck in the port. you already checked the cable so....

    Thanks for the reply,

looks like I might have a hardware failure on my hands.

I took a flashlight and looked into the port, it looked clean and everything seemed in place.

Next I booted up a linux live cd(one that worked fine over my wired network 2 days ago) and I can't get a connection with that either. :(

It's strange, I've used Asus motherboards for years in my desktops and have never had a problem with them.

Are you able to ping the loopback address(127.0.0.1) for the wired connection(in Linux usually eth0)? If so then the hardware is functional and it's something else. Have you checked the bios to ensure the connector wasn't disabled? Have you flashed or made any other changes to bios recently?

Thanks sparky33, I was able to ping it.

I went to Realtek's website and they've just released a new driver 3 days ago. I unistalled the old driver again, rebooted my machine and installed the new driver from realtek. Much to my delight this fixed my problem! :D

Asus still has the old driver in their download section, if anyone else is having a problem with their realtek nic try this driver: http://tinyurl.com/2f4kzd

Again thanks for all of the replies. I'm so happy it wasn't faulty hardware, hehe.

Good to hear! Nothing worse than something small but so important giving you problems.
