just bought a new W3V - which I love.
Does anyone have any trouble with 'grainy' dvd playback'? Do you think I have a faulty unit, or could this be a driver problem?
Cheers,
-
What dvd player software are you using? I use PowerDVD with the W3V, and movies look absolutely outstanding on it's screen.
Tuaman... not a David Tua fan by any chance, are you? ~_^

asus dvd is actually powerdvd (4 i think) just rebadged, so if your having problems with dvd playback it might be worth trying a few different programs. How is it with mediaplayer? etc

media player should work.... power dvd 4 is what asus is using.... it's a great program... personally I LOVE nvidia' NVDVD..... I think it's the only dvd program that outputs a true 5.1 channel surround to my decoder...
Also, i think there is a HUGE difference between different dvd players as far as picture quality........ NVDVD has the best in my opinion..... and yes.. it works just fine with an ATI card..
Thanks,
Justin

WinDVD 6 Platinum Edition has the best picture quality, as Intervideo they have licensed Philips's Digital Natural Motion technology - it indeed recreates 50 fps from 25 or 23.976 fps material. It is absolutely awesome. The only problem is that you have to disable hardware iDCT and have your processor run very hot (unless you only want to watch interlaced material, which is unlikely).

i use powerdvd looks crisp. i do have one question, why is DVD audio low on laptop speakers? does it have to do with how the audio is encoded? windows system beeps sound louder haha. i read about enabling hardware acceleration for sound but haven't quite figured it out.

That's another thing that is different between players..... some seem to pump out the audio higher than others.

That's correct too.... if you're running on a two speaker stereo laptop, you're best option is to run it in stereo... although some people don't realize that.

Dolby Digital is always noticeably quieter than PCM or DTS on almost all standalone players.

It's almost entirely up to the software. Sonic Cineplayer, for example, is wicked ass loud. PowerDVD's volume is relatively low...
One thing I did notice with PowerDVD is that by changing one of the audio properties from "dolby digital downmix" to "stereo", the sound is noticibly louder.

thanks. yea i've definitely gone through all the powerdvd settings and even checked the dyanamic loud environment settings which powerdvd recommened for notebooks. still not good enough, i'd have to be in a library for it to be loud enough. a fan would overpower the DVD volume haha.
i read that DVD volume can even be too low for home theater setups because of the extreme dynamic range of sound-effects laden movies nowadays and that the average volume is therefore lower. sounds plausible, explosions and so loud and voice volume would end up substantially lower to keep it in check.
well i think i've found a solution. i was thinking about how i needed an equalizer to increase the gains on the midbass so i can hear the voice decently and well what do you know, the realtek driver provides an equalizer. sure it probably eats a small amount of CPU cycles but I've saved a profile for just DVD playback (midbass set to +12db LoL) and it sounds perfect now. still can't get bass [] .
i'm gonna see if i can somehow get louder volume while encoding to DIVX. i've got a few movies i'd like to carry around with me. anyone like big lebowski? []

hey just out of curiousity, the cd tray of the optical drive shows dvd+r dl, but when in windows, it shows dvd-rw... so is my optical drive at DVD+R or DVD+RW or DVD-R or DVD-RW?? My w3v is a US version.
.. on stock Asus W3V -
it supports both variations of R and RW. also dl is dual layer or dvd-9. don't remember how many GB is holds; guessing around 9.

It's a dual layer drive...so it writes all the following: DVD+R or DVD+RW or DVD-R or DVD-RW. I believe they all write at different speeds though...some are slower than others...they don't all write at 8x. Hope that makes it clear [8D]

Yeah.. and I want to say it writes Dual Layer at 4x...
