"512 MB DDR2 Dual Channel 400/533MHz DRAM, up to 2GB"

That is a quote from Asus Website.
Why does it say 400/533 on Asus website for W3V Memory ?

Is it possible to get this with 1Gig Memory ?

I am a newbie here and used laptops for a long time. Thanks to all the forum members for informational posts. I am debating between W3V/Z63A/W5. The current rebate might seal the deal for me.

It means you can use both DDR1 and DDR2, 400mhz and 533mhz respectively, in the w3v, but using 533 would somewhat give you more 'power'

There is one 512 gb sticks inside, so you can take that out, buy two 533 1024mb sticks of ram and put it in the w3v.

I'm pretty sure you can't use DDR1 in place of DDR2. When it says DDR2 400/533, you can use DDR2 with frequencies of either 400 or 533 mhz.

You can get it with more memory, from dealers that will customize the notebook (Startech is one), but void the Asus 2 year warranty and replace it with their own.

Otherwise you could add your own memory.

    Thanks for quick replies.

I couldn't understand the part about voiding the warranty. If I add an additional stick of 512 MB memory myself, would I be voiding the warranty also ? I am looking for 1 GIG of memory. Are both slots accessible from the bottom of the case ?

The easiest thing to try to grasp is that if you're afraid of voiding the warranty by installing a stick of ram, you shouldn't be doing it....... you can't ruin the system and Asus can't tell that you installed another stick of ram, unless you don't know what you're doing and your short out your motherboard or something......

It's just a warning to keep those who shouldn't be touching the system, from going in and touching the system.

You would void the warranty. However, if you put it in yourself, and needed warranty service, you could take out what you put in and send it in for warranty work. I'm not telling you to do it, but you could.

I believe 1 stick is easily accessible, while the other requires removal of the keyboard. I don't know which is used @ stock.

The one under the keyboard is where you'll find the original stick. The open dimm is located under the cpu cover which has about six little screws in it...... fairly simple and straight forward.

Thanks GregM. I am also looking to get a laptop for my wife and am leaning towards Z63A or Gateway M250. Thanks for the review of your machine.
