I have been using my W3V for the past 8 months no problems, but recently I decided to ugrade my hard drive to a faster 7200 RPM Hitachi (7K100), I then grabbed the 2nd HarddriveModular Kit and popped in the old 4200 100GB into it.. It runs fine when plugged in, however, I noticed that the performance on battery is very slow and I can hear the drive spin up and down...

if I try to play a DivX movie from my main drive, it works perfectly while on battery, but when I place the exact same movie on the 2nd drive, it doesn't run and completely lags then plays for 3 secs, then lags, then plays, then lags...etc.. what the heck, are any of you experiencing this? It's as if the dive isn't getting enough juice or something

What could be the problem? I tried looking into a new BIOS as well as checking NHC if I can administer the power management options but no luck..

Hi dvx1000. This is totally off the subject of your question, but I was wondering if you have any more of your touchpad protectors for the dv1000 for sale? Also your brushed aluminum kit too? Thanx.

The second hard drive is for storage..... and I believe the connection to the laptop is slower through the optical drive than it is the harddrive...... I'd never stream anything over that way, but that doesn't mean it's not working as it's supposed to be.

That might be true, but while it's plugged in, it seems to work perfectly fine.. so I'm really wondering if it's software related or not..

    hmm...

sit tightly.. we're trying to develop a site to sell this(for other lappys too!), we're working on the packaging and pricing at the moment. but if you really can't wait, I can do this on my spare time for you! I've been getting quite a bit of demands though so I'm really excited in bringing this to the masses..

please pm me, about this.. gonna continue my thread cuz I'm still experiencing this problem with my laptop..

I'm pretty disssappointed with this W3V 2nd drive kit, it seems useless and maybe I should have just gotten an external USB enclosure instead of this cuz at least I can run it full speed streaming whatever I need from it when on batteries.. I know the z70VA doesn't have this issue..

Justin, Do you mean the 2nd HDD Mainboard connector limits the speed of the HDD, ie, not ATA 100, but only ATA 33??
Anybody done any BM on 2ND HDD??
I thought Intel site had RAID matrix software so that w/ 2 HDD in NB, could set up RAID 0 or Raid 1 w/ Mobile chipsets in NB/LT.
btw, SATA HDD in a NB only seem to work @ ATA 100, not SATA 1 / aka 150. Heard it was a mainboard design limitation, or just the Intel chip on the board?

2nd hard drive runs on the secondary ide channel. My Maxtor 6L300R0 drive runs in udma mode 6.

According to HDTach, random access 14.6ms, avg read 54mb/s, burst speed 114mb/s (it's actually a bit slower than I thought...)

try benching on Battery mode, I noticed a huge difference in speed. With those burst speeds mentioned, you can stream video no prob

On my laptop, it barely works(unusable) on battery mode.. AC mode its fine....

Hey dvx1000. I got your message and I'm still very interested in the kit. Just let me know what kind of payment you'll take?

Finally found the problem! Totally a jumper issue of the installed 2nd harddrive. If you don't install a jumper, you'll run into either my problem or not identifying it properly on startup. The jumper location must be on pins 1-2 (closest to the connector on the kit) if you place it on 3-4 you'll experience what I have been dealing with for the past month or so.

I'm surprised most of you Asus experts didn't know about this one, and there were no indications or manuals that warn you about this. It's not like the drive wasn't working at that state, it just wasn't working at it's full potential..

I'm getting 37MB/Sec average now on batteries with HD TUNE, and my main drive 53MB/Sec.
So no, if installed correctly the 2nd drive should run at it's full speed. Not the optical drive rumor as this connector/2nd module is actually IDE1 on the controller (IDE0 is the main drive)

So no issues at all.. :) I'm a happy camper

    ok. new problem.

Anyone else who is swapping between your Optical Drive and Hard Drive getting this error?

The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later

This is rather annoying because I would want to swap the harddrive, and often there is no programs that is using the drive. I basically close all the programs, but the message still pops up...seems like a bug. I know, this is more a Windows XP problem, but has any of you guys that use the HDD kit found a workaround?
