Hi
Does anyone know of the hack that enables you to play any region DVDs on you W3V?
Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure that if u download anyDVD, it'll do the trick (it would work in theory at least because it disables any copyright protection or region encryption so that you can copy DVD's. It runs in the background so it should work.

you could also try DVD Region+CSS Free: http://www.dvdidle.com/
I have been using it for about a year now...well worth the money, and works seemlessly in the background (i beleive there is also a trial period so you can test it out). The advantage is that there is no risk to your dvd drive, as its pure software, not a firmware hack which could stuff your drive completely.

Thanks for the tips guys.
Underpantman, I used the software that you recommended and it worked a treat.
Now I can relax a little and buy a load of cheap DVDs when I am in Hong Kong.

After searching for this thread again, I realize it's already been answered, but I have another suggestion.
I have this one dvd I got while overseas and I've only ever played in my laptops... more currently it's been in my W3. Well I went to put it in my home dvd player and it didn't work becasue it had the wrong region code.... at that instant I thought of this thread.
I'm using nvidia' NVDVD player..... Again, I love ATI and I always liked Power DVD ... so Asus' AsusDVD is great as well... but I know that it's not the drives as I've used pioneer, toshiba and panasonic drives....... but the software that is letting me play them....
With that I'm going to encourage people check out the free copy of it and if they like it they can purchase it I think....
Thanks,
Justin

I'm still looking for one of these region-free programmes that will work on the M5, so if anyone ever finds one, please post here to say which one!!
The DVD player in the M5 (at least in mine; perhaps US ones are different) is a Mat****a/Panasonic UJ-812. It's one of the slim-line ones (used in the M5 and some of the small Sony laptops, I believe). So far, it has apparently resisted all attempts to make it region-free, both software and firmware.
And as I use my laptop in both the UK and North America, I'd really like to be able to play DVDs from both regions! -

Try to find the free demo of NVDVD at www.nvidia.com .... I think they still have a demo up there.

Robyn,
You are out of luck with that drive. See this thread http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=101267
Quote from the thread:
"...Matsu****a (Panasonic) drives are more restrictive than they need to be.
There is nothing AnyDVD, DVDDecrypter, or any other software can do about this. Sorry."

That's not completely true.... The notebook that I originally played this dvd I was talking about in... was on that pansonic drive in my M5.... I don't know if it was the software or what... but it can be done.
Thanks,
Justin

Justin,
Nvidia's site only offers patches to existing NVDVD users. Is there anywhere I can get the full program?

edit: never mind. it works. I'm dumb!
no, wait. It doesn't work! All I can do is choose a skin. former question applies.

MB,
I didn't try to do anything... I was in italy and I bought a movie there... watched it just fine on my player... then brought it home and the next time i watched it it was on my other laptop, then on my desktop.... then almost a year later when I get around to watching it in my home sony player... doesn't work.
I can't say one way or another, but the error in the home player was a region error.... I know that it never worked in media player... that's about all I know.
Thanks,
Justin

Yeah, I brought a few dvd's with me on the trip.. so I've watched them before and after...
Maybe the age of the drive has something to do with it... I've upgraded my motherboard and chassis to where that system is actually now a white z33a .... when I did that upgrade, I also through in a new dvd burner off the V6..... But up until then that combo drive was from November of 2003..... the drive itself might be from september or october though.... but maybe they changed something even though the model number is still the same?
I know I don't have any issues with the new dvd burner... but I think that's a toshiba or something anyway...
Thanks,
Justin

Justin,
Have you watched any region 1 DVDs on your M5 since trying that Italian one? Maybe your drive was already set to region 2 or something.
Too bad you didn't have a great workaround for that issue. For a second there I was hoping you had some solution all worked out. [] No worries though.
I would love to see it work too. I pick up a non-region 1 DVD occasionally and it's a pain when the notebook can't play it.

maybe you were still within the 5 changes allowed? When I switched regions, a box came up to tell me that it was switching the region code.
I tried anyDVD and DVD-decrypt and another one or two, and none of them worked with this drive, unfortunately.
Another story I heard from someone is that when they got their drive replaced, the region code was set to 0 instead of to any region at all, and that automatically bypassed region coding. So maybe a few lucky people have had that happen, and can get it to work.
Or maybe you've actually bought multi-rgion DVDs without noticing, especially if the box didn't come up saying your region code woudl be changed!
It's a pain. Not that I watch DVDs that much on the laptop because the stupid fan is too loud, so I can't hear the volume properly, but it would be nice when travelling. -

No.... it wasn't multi region becasue it wouldn't work in my home player...
