Hi there,
I apologize if this has already been covered. I was wondering if anyone else has had trouble with dead pixels on the W3V, or asus laptops in general? I'm finding more and more dead pixels weekly, and have atleast 3 large groups of dead pixels, on top of dead pixels scattered around the screen in various spots. I love this laptop, but no longer watching movies and videos on it because of this fact.
Does anyone have any tips on what I can do? My machine is still under warranty for another 8 or so months. I appreciate the help!

Yes, call them and tell em your LCD is a lemon. Once a pixel goes bad there really is no way to get it back.

I've only seen and heard of a need for a handful of lcds to be replaced over the years. It's not common, but you certainly won't run into a problem getting it replaced. Give them a call and if you run into a problem drop me an email and I'll help get it resolved for you.

Ok, that's good...... I see what you're talking about, but I've NEVER seen such clusters. I am only surprised however by one thing..... is that unit two months old or more like 14 months old? If it's rather new, the screen is extremely dirty...

haha, I bought it May 2005. I haven't cleaned it with solution in a while. Next time I go home I'll be sure to.
-
I've never seen clusters like that either. Weird.
I have on stuck pixel (red) very close to the centre of my screen. It's very annoying... -
those are some insane dead pixels man.

One question - does it make a difference that I'm in Canada?

ok, no it doesn't matter, just give Asus a call.

So I ended up calling in, and I was asked to ship the notebook in. Unfortunately, I really need my computer right now for school. I was wondering if anyone had an idea on the timeline, i.e. how long it'll take for them to send me my machine back? He said 2-3 days after looking it at, but is that looking at it in the States, or Taiwan?
Thanks! -
They will look at it in the states, most likely. (California)
It should take ~3 days to get it down there... 1-2 days of looking at it... and another ~3 days to ship it back to you.
I would assume that it shouldn't take any longer than 2 weeks max... but it all depends on the volume. -

If you 2day it to Asus, they'll turn it around within usually 48 hours and overnight it back to you. That means a turnaround time from when it leaves your hands of 5 business days...... so look at it like this... If you had sent it out today, subtract the weekend, they'd get it on Tuesday, they'd ship it out on Thursday, and you'd get it Friday. That's super quick no matter how you look at it. Typically this is what I'd see, if not even slightly quicker by a day..
Your issue is one that is covered under the normal warranty and good till the end... so why don't you figure out when a good time would be? That way you won't lose time when you need it and the system still works and you can use it.... so put it off till you have a break of some sort when you can part with it. -
That's what I figured, Justin. As soon as I am done exams in December, I will send it off, should be about the 20th or so. Then I likely won't need it until the first or so week of January.

There you go...... just make sure to check ahead so that they have the screen and would have the time.

Hey guys,
The time I planned to send in my computer is fast approaching. My question is, should I backup all my files before sending the computer in? I know it's a good idea to do regular backups, but my question is mainly because I have 20-30GB of music, and I it would take forever to backup onto individual DVDs. If I don't need to back it all up, I'd rather not. (I'll be sure to back up my other more important files though).
And will I have to pay for all the shipping and everything myself, or do they cover that?
Thanks! -

Your back ups are your own problem.. It's good practice to do them regularly anyway, but what's 6 dvd's worth of music on say a 4 or 8x drive?
You pay for shipping to Asus, they pay for 2Day back to you. -
dokta, read this. Backing up your HD is always a good idea, but not necessary IMO. Shipping was free both ways for me ..

Normal Asus warranty return - split shipping - you pay to them, they pay back to you...... Don't want to get anyone's hopes up, because that's actually how it's written in their warranty.

Thanks for the info, guys. If it's shipping to R.Hill, it shouldn't be that much, or I can just drive it to them (I like 40 mins away)
Reading Pigeon's story really gives me peace of mind, I'm so glad I bought Asus! -
If you can bring it in directly, go for it. It'll save you the hassel of shipping.
Cheers. -
Hey guys,
I'm back. I returned my laptop to Asus through shipping and they got it back to me within a week with a brand new LCD and top cover. Amazing service.
This was about a year ago. Here's the problem: This morning I opened my screen to notice a new cluster of dead pixels on the right hand side of the screen, in a similar spot to last year. There's also a really bright white cluster on the left hand spot, similar to last year.
I doubt I'm doing anything wrong as I don't even let people near the screen with their fingers. Could it be something within the main computer part, under the keyboard, that is causing it?
The big problem though, is that I purchased my computer in May of 2005, so the original warranty is done. Do I have any chance at getting the screen replaced again, considering it's been only a year? -
bump. any advice at all?
