Ever since last night, the lcd on my w3v keeps going out, it will just go black, i can tell that things are working in the background but i cant get anything to show unless i restart it, sometimes if i turn off and turn back on right away even at startup it will be completely black, the computer turns on cause i hear the windows log on and everything but nothing shows. If i leave it off for a while it will work for say 5 minutes and go black after that. This just suddenly started happening.

I had some issues about 4-5 months ago where the screen would go black during games and when i was about to send it in, it suddenly just stopped doing that and has been working fine since, but the computer would freeze during those instances, right now its just going black from what i can tell.

I didn't purchase an extended warranty, does anyone know how long the regular warranty is, i purchased the w3v last about a year and a half ago

Any ideas as to how to fix this without sending it in (thats if i can still send it in for that matter)

Well it sounds like hardware... (a bad connection with the LCD, to be precise)

But to be really sure, you could try running Linux or DOS for a while (there are bootable CDs on the internet, see knopper.org or freedos.org) and see if the screen goes off. If it does, it's probably hardware.

If you're in the US, probably you had a 1year standard warranty. But you can always check your papers :)

Okay now this is strange, when i run the laptop on battery, it seems to be working fine (40 minutes of testing, browsing, watching a movie etc) but once i plug the ac adapter in, within 2 minutes screen goes black again, this happened while i was watching a movie, sound stopped for about 5 seconds and then start playing but then the quality of sound went bad

does this mean it may be an AC adapter problem?

Ok, this means it is a bad interplay between ACPI and video drivers.

If you're using modded video drivers please revert to stock. If you use stock, please update or use modded.

Also, make sure you're using the latest version of ACPI drivers.

And if neither of these works, consider updating your BIOS if it's not already the latest version.

once it goes black it stays black, i cant get it working again unless i manually shut it off and restart it, even then if i do it immediately, it seems like it will turn on black, i have to turn it off and leave it off say maybe 5 minutes for it to start up (it starts up both plugged in and not plugged in, but only works not plugged in, if it is plugged in, it goes black before windows even starts up)

i havent added any new drivers for the longest time but ill try switching back to stock drivers from the omega drivers im using right now

It's worth trying anyway. If the problem does not appear on battery I don't believe it's hardware.

Are you using the same display brightness on both mains and battery?

Normally battery power defaults to lower brightness which means less power through the inverter and backlight. This reduces the likelihood of an overheating-related problem.

Try running on mains from a cold start with a fairly dim backlight.

bleh now i cant even get stay working long enough in battery mode to try any of these things, its getting pretty bad, i think i only had a 1 year warranty but i guess i can try contacting asus and see what can be done, if anyone has any other idea please let me know :(

    [edit]
yea looks like im a few months out of the warranty, the guy said they can still check what the problem is but whatever it turns out to be there is going to be a charge to fix it, but hopefully with some help i can get it fixed myself without having it cost me anything

Well, before sending it for paid service, try a few other things using an external monitor.

    Drivers rollback to stock
    Windows restore to stock
    Linux or FreeDOS bootable CD

If you get the problem after all these things, it's probably hardware.

You can then try to take it apart yourself and see if some cable is loose, and even if it's not just pull everything out and then in again.

Edit: just seen that you can't use external.

Go straight to Linux or FreeDOS / Windows restore then.

it seems the longer i leave the computer off, the longer it stays on without going black

after leaving it off most of the day, i was actually able to start the ASUS windows restore, but it went black before finishing

now when i start it, windows is not completely installed, its missing files, bleh so much troubles

im just gonna send it in tomorrow and see what asus says is wrong, maybe try to fight for warranty, cause online it says all notebooks have a 2 year warranty for repair, hopefully i can get it fixed for free but if it costs too much to fix then im not sure what ill do

"it seems the longer i leave the computer off, the longer it stays on without going black"

I smell a bit of overheating then.

Did you clean up the dust from the insides recently? (fan, heatsink evacuation grid)
