Hey all, quick Q... what speakers/cable do I need to be able to take advantage of this 5.1 spdif output that the W3V apparently has? I picked up the Logitech z5300e 5.1 thx speakers, but the 5.1 ends up being matrixed sound as i can only use the one input. Is there another set I have to get? a special cable? Do I need to upgrade to the z5500's? Could anyone clarify and offer up a suggestion?

    thanks,

    Mike

Those are analogue speakers. If you wish to use the digital output you need to hook it up to a speaker set or receiver featuring an optical toslink input with a mini toslink to toslink cable. Note that it can only do 5.1 digital sound as pass-through from a pre encoded source (like a DVD).

k, found someone who locally carries this cable... 45 smacks... ouch!
but will these speakers do the trick?
    Logitech z5500?

There is one at Newegg for $20. You could probably find one even cheaper somewhere. And, yes: The Logitech Z5500 control unit does feature an optical input.

Alright.... I'm staring at the z5500's... with the toslink cable... all I can say is wow!
I've never heard a computer sound so spectacular!

Wow, that was quick. Where'd you find the mini-toslink to toslink cable in 3 hours? I didn't think that would be something that the local BestBuy would have.

Many 'mainstream' shops do in fact carry such an adapter, but most likely wouldn't know it if you asked them for one. Sony, for example, have used this plug on lots of portable devices and it can often be found found among other Sony cables and accessories.

Here in town, actually across from my backyard, we have a Bleeker stereo and tv, they are a locally owned chain, and they carry the higher end stuff like denon and yamaha. I called them and they happened to have an optical cable with the mini-optical adapters. They even quoted me wrong, as the cable turned out to be 24.99 CDN. :)
