Shutter, you are absolutely correct. Those are our only options and with the latest firmware doing zilch, it's pretty disappointing huh? Like I said, many of the solutions in this forum are hacks. Why should I have to spend money for an extra sound card for my notebook that should have working sound built in?!
I will try your suggestion tonight. And don't be silly. I am not here to point fingers. I think you and I see eye to eye on most issues thus far.
Peace!

so does anyone know what the deal is with the audio on DVD's? i'v had people telling me they have experienced the same problem with home theater equipment.
-
If you guys are looking for a good pair of cheap headphones/earphones to use on planes - I highly suggest the Sony MDR-EX51LP (they're on sale at Amazon right now for around $25). I have a pair that I use with my Rio Karma when I'm on planes. Considering how cheap they are, they come surprisingly close to the performance of my Shure E3c's.
The problem with the audio on DVDs is that Dolby Digital 5.1 doesn't measure volume quite the same as CDs or music. The sound effects (crashes, explosions etc..) are much louder than normal dialogue. Also, there is no standard "volume" when they record the audio. -
I'm looking for options to improve the audio. Has anyone used the Turtle beach audio advantage usb? Otherwise I suppose I'll look at whatever the latest creative card is....

You have a few options for audio hardware for a notebook. Firewire, USB, or PCMCIA. Why would you want something connected to your notebook by a wire? Another thing to get snagged.
Get an Echo Indigo PCMCIA and be done with. Please don't get anything Creative.
Peace!

Yeah, the only two PCMCIA options are basically the Indigo and Creative Audigy2 ZS Notebook. I would trust the Indigo more but it only allows for stereo output, not 5.1/7.1 Also, I don't know whether it allows for output back to the laptop internal speakers, whereas the latest drivers from Creative definitely do. So basically you can use the Audigy to power internals, headphone, and externals. I'm actually looking seriously at the Audigy myself.
Out of curiosity, Sygyzy, why don't you recommend Creative? -

Ok i have an open mind. Can i hear the follow up.? I dont claim to know everything but I know everything I claim to know. I think i should revise my questions. Are sound cards like turtle beach just a nitche market.? Sort of like mac compared to pc. I think most people would agree here they would never go to mac just becuase its highly overrated and overpriced. I ll be honest though. I know nothing about proper amplification or bit perfect reproduction. I do make systems for dj's and i do know they have some "strange" requests and demands. Without a spec sheet i would not know what a audio system consist of.

for me.. the speakers are horrible. I can't hear a thing in an environment with people talking. Even with my earfones, the output is horrible. Not just watching dvds, but using windows media player etc
