Hi guys,
I finally decided to buy the Asus W3V.
I live in Holland, where this model is available at a limited amount of retailers. I managed to find one near me and went over there to see the notebook. I had to have it![]()
Only this one had a dead pixel. Another one in stock also had a dead pixel.
Of course, this was not acceptable. The store said they were going to order another one. After a couple of days I got a phonecall to say they had it, but that one also had a dead pixel. No go.
Then I went on holiday for 2 weeks. After I came back I contacted the store. In the period I was gone, they had another 2 models in which also had dead pixels.
They said that 2 more notebooks were being delivered on the day I spoke to them and that they would test them. This was 2 days ago, which leads me to believe that these 2 also have dead pixels.
What I wanted to ask you guys is this: What the hell is going on at Asus? Have any of you experienced the same thing?
7 notebooks with dead pixels after one another is not normal, isn't it?
I've paid (which I pay with the notobook when i pick it up) a small amount to ensure that I get a notebook with zero dead pixels, only I'm afraid at how long the store will keep on ordering new models.

I'd be more interested in why this same retailer has recieved so many by themselves. We haven't seen that many bad pixels in all the years we've been importing their notebooks...... seems very fishy, but I also don't know what the quality control on the dutch side looks like. Everything gets checked in Tiawan, and there's no logical reason why one place would be plagued with this. Is there a way you could get them to find out the panel model number? There are a few different panels they are using worldwide (1 in the US) ....... I'd just be curious which they have.

Not saying that they're scandelous, but maybe, they only had 2 and just said that they kept on ordering them and all that just to make you happy... but really, they just want you to just take one of them or buy something else that's in their inventory.
If it's the model that you want, I'd say try another vendor who carries it. -
Well, at one point the dude said to me that the distributor was out of stock, and that they had to wait for the next delivery from Asus Taiwan.
He told me the name of the distributor, which is BAS (maybe you've heard of them). Incendently, I used to work for them indirectly. They are pretty much the largest distributor/importer over here and also own a chain of stores.
He also said that the distributor doesn't quality control s**t, and Asus themselves only do it sometimes... I agree, it's very weird.
But anyway, I was assured a dead pixel free notebook, so I guess it's a matter of waiting.
Maybe it's just a case of (very) bad luck... -
My girlfriend and I both ordered from geared2play.com on the same day. The where however shipped on two different days. Anyway, my girlfriend's came first with one very bright pixel towards the middle of the screen. Appears to be red, but with a dead pixel checker in red it turns black - don't know why. We found 2 more green pixels I think, that disappear in grean but are visible in blue or red.
My W3V came 3 days later with 1 green pixel - haven't found anything else yet. This leads me to believe that it is normal for that model (otherwise they might have a ZBD pixel policy for this one too). Or was it just bad luck? -
My Z63A came with a perfect screen (same screen as the W3V). I'm curious now as to if there was a bad batch or something. Dead pixels are common, thus the multiple dead-pixel policy. I have heard that as supply of the screens decreases, the stuff that they are willing to accept increases.

Just to give you an idea into how it works. So far i ve had the following bad lots that i am even aware of.:
.....lot of 12 dead hitachi drives
..lot of 3 dead lcd's
............lot of about 30 (out of 100) rma toshiba drives
....................lot of 50 (out of 60) 480watt crappy power supplies (buy name brand) that came back to haunt me after a few weeks.
.......many lots of lots of consecutive notebooks (varying brand varying models) with atleast one dead pixel
Lots of other unexplained unpredicatable anomalies. Out of all the bad stuff i only boycotted a company once. That was the time we got 50 bad supplies that only came back after some time of usage. -
I *just* picked up my w3v a few hours ago in store, and yep it has a dead pixel. When I first loaded it up into the windows setup and saw the bright dot, I almost died.
It's one bright green dot, about maybe 3 mm from the top of the screen in the middle. I might not notice it after awhile, but it just frustrates me to have paid that much money to have this kind of a problem.
I called the place I bought it from, they said that I'd have to see if Asus themselves were willing to swap it, but I only have one pixel so even if I call and beg or w/e I doubt they'll do anything. I'll still try and call them tommorow though.
My fault for not trying to secure a guarantee with a dealer though I guess. -
By the way, I called the Asus support about the screen of my girlfriend's W3V. The guy had a strong Asian accent and was reading from a computer screen I guess - he basically repeated the policy that you can also find on the ISTNC (not sure, I always mix these letters up) homepage, which basically is that there can be quite a few pixels and asus will still not do anything. In any case, I think the most annoying part about this phone call was, that he kept telling me that if we send in the laptop to get the display exchanged, we might end up with one that is even worse. (which sounded like that they can easily put you a display that fall in their policy range - if intentionally or not I don't know). So don't hope for much if you call them. The good thing was that he gave me his email address at asus so I can email him pictures about the display and then he will give me more info. Since my girlfriend is out of town we didn't do that yet, but I guess we will try.

Yeah that's the kind of response I was kind of expecting I'd get...can't hurt to still try though I guess

Some dealers offer an optional pixel policy. We charge 75$
This may seem unfair but seing how no dealers for asus product have all the same basic policy we have to offer a supplemental pixel policy. Some loyal users claim their dealers "will rpelace their dead pixel" even if the dealer clearly displays the same policy thet belongs to asus. I think you will most definitely learn to live with your dp as i did and i am no stranger to it. As for a dp flood i personally have seen 2 units with a single dp in the last 20 or so w3v's that we shipped. Funny part is the z63a with the same screen has a much less sinister dp rate. -
Hmm, it seems I'm not the only one then, but my case is extreme
Yeah, I think all the dead pixel policy crap with all manufacturers are a total ripoff.
I'm going to pay lots of money, so I expect a good screen.
Unfortunately, if I want this I'm going to have to pay 50 euro to the retailler.
Oh well...
@ Muse:
If Asus won't do anything, take the thing back to your retailler and ask for a new one with zero dead pixel guarantee.
Of course, I don't know where you live, but I expect you have consumer rights, e.g. take back stuff that don't live up to your expectations... -
OMG, just got a call from the shop, they've got one without dead pixels!!!
Going to pick it up tonight, can't wait!!! -
Mine came with a dead pixel also, and I ordered it from asus directly they wont respond to my emails

You ordered from asus directly? Well certainly not in this country. Asus does not sell anything on their site and unless you are a dealer who does a crap load with them and has been with them from the get go they are not selling anything to you.
