Hi, I often record stuff of the TV with my DVD Recorder and I want to watch what I've recorded on my W3V, but when I put the disc in the drive it goes all black then jams, then either restarts or goes into that blue screen saying it has shut down to prevent further damage to my computer.
When I try the DVDs in my desktop PC (about 4 years old!) they work!

I'm using AsusDVD which looks alot like PowerDVD for some reason.

    What could be wrong?

There are three possible causes: media, software and hardware.

Media is probably the biggest problem with optical drives. Not only do you have to find media that the burner likes, but then you need to check that the discs you produce can be read in other drives. This is slightly easier than winning the lottery. One brand of media that I used in my DVD recorder was only readable by the recorder.

The player software may be a problem. AsusDVD is PowerDVD 4 with a different name and is now 2 years old. You can get a trial version of PowerDVD 6 from http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/download/download.html or WinDVD from http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/WinDVD_Profile.jsp and see if you get the same crashes.

Only when you have tried different media and different software can suspicion be directed at the hardware.

I dont own a W3V, but I burn a lot of DVD's and Taiyo Yuden is considered the best you'll ever get. I've had no problems playing in any player / drive. You can get Taiyo Yuden 4X at 0.26~0.28/Disc. I haven't tried this myself but a lot of people can burn them at 8X/12X but since I only have a 4X drive, i can't verify this for myself.

I've never even heard of Taiyo Yuden! I think I've been using Memorex 4x DVD-R media... I think it usually burns faster (I have a 16x in my desktop). I've yet to have a compatibility issue with it. When I run out, I may have to look into Taiyo Yuden, though.

    Check out this link...

    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

I found it very helpful when trying to identify DVD media, as my W3V seems to be very sensitive to the make of media I use. I used to just buy whatever was on sale when I used my old HP laptop and an external DVD burner(LG), but not anymore...

Here are a couple of brands I have documented for my own future reference.

-Phillip's 8x +R (unknown ID) was garbage for me; almost every DVD was junk
-Memorex 16x+R (RICOHJPN) is almost perfect; but about 1 in 4 movies I back up will glitch briefly if there is an encyrption/layer switch during payback...and it will only burn @ 4x.

I will be trying Taiyo Yuden next, as I also have heard it's the best... Just remember there is a difference between the "Brand and the Media ID" of a DVD, so be sure to read the entire link above.

Does anybody know of a good website to purchase TY media??

    Thanks & Good luck!!

The link to DigitalFAQ is useful and the results generally fall within my own experience. However, I'm surprised to see CMC in the 3rd class. My Memorex +R 8X use CMC dye and Memorex media are usually OK. Maybe the Bulkpaq media with MCC dye that caused me problems were fakes.

I have a W3V and have used Taiyo Yuden (branded as Fuji -R) discs (4x burning) with mixed results. Almost all of them will play on the notebook dvd drive but about half of them won't play properly on my Sony standalone. Inexplicably, a few of the discs that didn't work on my standalone did work on other dvd players.

As mentioned by a previous poster finding compatible media with the W3V burner is a pain in the butt -- at least in my case.
