Recently I have been experiencing problems with my computer freezing during games. After experiencing many freezes I noticed that my fans are not revving up to high speed like they used to. Before when I played the games the fans were going full blast with a lot of noise but now the fans are constantly on low speed and I'm suspecting that the laptop overheats because the fans are not working at proper speeds. I downloaded speedFan to see if I could manually control the fans but the program doesn't support my computer. I was wondering if there is any other software that allows me to control the fans of my computer.
Thanks

How long have you had this laptop?
Have you tried cleaning the fan and heat sink? -
I got the laptop around a two years ago and yes I have cleaned my fan before.

Yes. Notebook hardware control can control the FAN speed by using the ACPI feature. You need to do a search on this forum for the downloadable W3V ACPI zip file. That will allow you to modify the temperature and RPM of the ram in the ACPI settings. I've used this on my W3V but it's not without bugs. You should check if the fan works at all, and if not you can get a replacement from the ASUS eStore. Here is the W3J fan from the estore:

Not sure if this works, but you'll have to ask ASUS directly if the W3J fan works. Wasn't able to find the W3V fan, guess they don't have that part anymore. -
thanks for the advice
My fan is working, just not very fast
Is the file you recommended safe to use? As in how badly can it screw up my computer and how I can change it back if it does?
Also wanted to know how to use the APCI files now that I downloaded them? -
Well the ACPI file won't damage your computer in anyway. It works! what I meant about bugs was Notebook Hardware Control itself, but I don't know what or how to fix it, I've had problems with the program suddenly crashing/not responding after a couple hours of usage sometimes 10-15 minutes. It might be my system though with the combination of software or drivers, I don't know. Others have had success though:
Anyway, get NHC here:

You can get the ACPI file here for the W3V:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=83295&highlight=w3v+acpi
Extract the file into the acpi directory in the Notebook Hardware Control , and it should be enabled in the ACPI tab.
Let me know if it works or not. -
Ok I downloaded the program and extracted the ACPI. Under the APCI tab I went in to the fan controls. So if I select high speed and turn it on It should rev up the fans instantly?
-
Get into the ACPI tab and change the RPMs to like 225, default is 145 so that should rev up the fan instantly. That would verify if the fan is working or not, and you can change it back to 145.. Run your game and monitor your temperatures(by using the NHC graphing/log feature). -
It says the default for high is 206, would it be safe to change that to a higher rpm?
-
otherwise it is working, i can feel the fans speeding up, Thanks Alot
-
awesome. yeah you can change it to 255 if you like, it's just louder and pushes more air. One thing you should do is change the low,mid and high temperatures so that the fan speeds up at a lower temperature. I've noticed that up til 175 RPM it's still relatively quiet so I would usually set that as the default for temperatures from 50-60 degrees, anything above would be 226, and anything above 72 degrees would be max at 255 RPM. That should prevent any crashing.
I would recommend one more thing though, use Thermal compound(like artic silver 5 or Zalman's thermal compound) and replace the stock heatpad on the heatsink spreader as that that gets worn and the effectiveness reduces during time. My W3V idles at 48-50 degrees, and tops out at 74 degrees on full load. -
Before going into all these mods, I would suggest reinstalling the ATK/ACPI drivers. They might be the cause for the fans not working properly.
Or did you do a BIOS update recently?
