Anyone open up the hard drive cover on the W3V? I have a 100gb 5400 momentus that I was planning on putting in at some point. I opened the hard drive cover and was a little confused as to what I was looking at. Over the HD was a black film like material and then over that was a band of thin film circuit looking material. I couldn't tell how is was even secured in place - no obvious screws. I didn't want to mess with it until I asked around. Other notebook I had seen did not hae this setup and was much simpler. Also I can't seem to get the HD cover completetly flush although I didn't notice if it was before hand.

The thin film is a ribbon cable connecting the HDD to the computer. The narrow end terminates in a plug that fits into a socket on the computer. The wide end of the ribbon cable terminates in a plug that connects to the HDD. The black plastic sheet is stuck onto the bottom of the HDD. Its exact purpose is not obvious. It may be an attempt to dissipate heat.
Nothing except the various soft inserts hold the HDD in place once you have removed the cover. After carefully prising the plug out of the socket you can lift the HDD out.
The Momentus 100GB fits into my W3A with no problem. However, I am concerned by the high temperatures that I am seeing. With heavy HDD use this can reach the rated 55°C. The same HDD ran about 10°C cooler in the Sony S series.

I'm in the same boat with my W3V.... am getting 55C with my 100GB Momentus! This is of course only when my laptop is sitting on my lap or the sheet of my bed (making sure the vents are not blocked as well).
However, when I use it on a table or desk, the HDD temp is 47C.
So if you use your laptop the way you are supposed to be, I guess.... you won't have a problem.

Try taking out the placeholder for the PCMCIA and memory stick ports. I did and my system temp has dropped one degree (from 54 to 53 C). Every little bit helps. No effect on my HD temp, but it seems to always stay at 46, no matter what.

What software are you guys using to measure various temps?
Also, everyone keeps noting the heat of the R palmrest and vent. On my W3V the hottest place is the HD cover - too hot to place on your lap with thin pants or shorts (I know your not suppose to do this). Is this what evryone else is experiencing as well? -

I'm using Centrino Hardware Control to undervolt and monitor everything.
The HD cover on the bottom certainly gets hotter than the palm rest, but since you're not actually expected to put a laptop on your lap, that doesn't really come into play. The palm rest is what people are interacting with more, so that's what they're commenting on.
I'm now running even cooler -- 45 for the CPU, 35 on my HD, but the AC is way cold in here right now..... -
