Hi All,
I've been lurking on the boards for a while, and I have to say that its been incredibly informative. I have a couple of specific questions concerning the W3V and its heat capacities.
I've been shopping around for a laptop for graduate school, and the W3V seems perfect - portable enough to carry around to conferences and for presentations, but large enough that I can comfortably use it for extended periods of writing.
I have a question about the heat though - is it going to be uncomfortable to be typing 9-5 daily with the heat that I've heard about on the palmrest? I'm also planning to use an external mouse on the right side - will the air being blown out of the exhaust be a problem if I do so?
Thanks for your all your help.
Sandeep
P.S. You've done a great job, Justin, in informing this board about Asus products - its too bad you don't have a business arm in Canada []

The palmrest gets warm, but that's it. If you hold the unit on your lap, you're gonna sweat, but that's not a very ergonomic typing position anyway. The hot air blowing out the vent is only noticeable if you put your hand right on it; an inch away, and you don't feel it, so it won't be a problem with a mouse.

The palmrest gets a little warm to the right of the touchpad, but nowhere near annoying (to me at least).
Warm air does blow out of the vent to the right. I can feel it from as far as about 1 foot away after the laptop has a chance to heat up. It really doesnt bother me at all though, and I do use a mouse.
I got my W3V yesterday and an extremely happy with it.
Really so far the only complaints I could make if I wanna be very picky is with--
- The heat
- The screen shows dust very easily. If you have any cats, their fur seems to be attracted to the screen. Probably the same with any glossy LCD.
- I havent messed with it much, but it seems that the DVD drive is somewhat difficult to remove. After moving the latch for it, the piece of plastic that you pull the drive out with bends, and seems like it could break. Maybe there is a trick to it...
- When opening the laptop, you have to hold the bottom part down when you lift the screen because of the firm hinge/light weight; but I'd rather this than having a loose hinge of a heavier computer.
Keep in mind these are minor complaints, and no laptop is perfect. I do think the W3V is about as close to pefection as you can get right now though. -

If you're looking for info on importing, just about everyone has reported back to me that all you're paying for importing the laptops would be the normal tax that you'd pay anyway. So, you can ask around, but if you're looking for us to be in Canada so you can say check them out or something.... then I fully understand you.
Thanks,
Justin

you've got to be talking about some serious heat if it's enough to bother someone typing for extended hours and you're not gonna experience it with the w3v. does the air that blow out get pretty warm? yea, of course. it means the cooling system is functioning.
i've had the laptop on for hours on end and i've never noticed the palmrest getting warm. the only way i can tell i'm giving the laptop a nice little workout is that air coming out the vent gets warmer.
robot, yea the dust is an issue but i think it comes with the territory. can't fault physics. i've a got a anti-static screen cleaner and it works wonders. i got it with the shaggymac screen protector.
as for removing the dvd player, hmm i doubt it would break. it's not flimsy but definitely flexible. i've found it best to apply more downward force rather to the side. give that a shot; you'll thank me i hope. []
