Just got my W3v and this thing is aswome... I think alot of people that are experiacning heat and screen issues is mostly in their head. The heat is barley noticable on the palm and the screen is so bright and colorful everytime i look at my crt or my other laptop they look dull and washed out its crazy. Anyway i have a problem were i re-installed windows.. I used this bare edtion with alot of the junk stripped out. And now no matter what i try i can not get the audio to work. It worked fine with the stock os, b4 i re-formatted.Now i tryed the lastest audio drives restarted a bunch of times all sort things and nothing. The Dj mode works fine but i want to be able to hear music while in windows.. Any help is appreciated.. thanks

What'd you strip out of the OS? You know that the image Asus loads doesn't have any junk on (well besides Norton which I would just uninstall)... but nothing else.... I wouldn't have done what you did, but my guess is you've got something turned of if the drivers just aren't working....... are they muted? etc.

Well in my opinion WindowsXp is blouted with crap from the start. like theres alot of services that dont need to be running for alot of ppl but by defualt they are turned on. Hence more Cpu usage, battery, ram, harddrive. You are ready new this... Heres the thing the driver isnt even showing up in device manager just the operating system ones (legacy audio codecs etc). I tried to install it manually but it never made a differance. Nothing shows up and if i manually go to the sound (speaker icon) in the control pannel everything is greyed out.... thanks for the quick reply..

No it dosnt show up in the device manager. When i manualy install hardware with the newest audio drivers i get some something like realtek Hd or something but it has an ! in front of it... What does the stock W3v drivers look like under the sound tab of the device manager?

Whoa Who!!! figured it out. There was a ! in front of PCI in system devices. didnt realize that would have anything to do with it but since the sound card is built in i should have figured it out. But anyway updated and installed the latest realtek driver (Def a big improvement on the loudness of volume) restarted and bam! Ive got sound again... Btw the windows xp edition im using is only 175mb iso image and i mean everything is stripped besides some important apps and any important drivers, but it runs nice..

and thanks for the help Justin...

Ok.. so... you're welcome, but let me get this straight....... you didn't have the driver installed and you made this big fuss? It's no big deal, but thanks for at least coming back and telling people you made a mistake.... more and more people figure it out and then never come back to the forum, either because they don't have the problem any more or because they're embarrassed.... and leaving a thread out dry like that only stirrs questions from future customers which are unfounded......

Glad I could point out the obvious :) !

THis is quite common on a lot of hard drives actually... it could be related to the brand of hard drives used in the W3v.

I know that it happens in my M6Ne... it's not particularly loud, but in a quiet room, it can easily be heard.

FYI: I have a Samsung drive in my notebook...

Hitachi drives make sounds some times... but it's dangerous... they're as solid as they come.
