Anyone know if it is possible to swap the W3V processor with a pentium m 778 (1.6ghz, socket 479)?

possible - but not the brightest idea. You'd be better off trying to undervolt your w3v........ because you'd be looking at another $350 or 400 for that cpu and then you're really limiting it's power.

778(1.6gHz LV) is rated 10W since the 750(1.86gHz) is rate 27W. The goal of this update is more a way to shut down the fan. I notice the fan start running at 47C and never turn off. If i unplug the fan, the processor temperature is stable near 48C and the m/b temp near 45C(with std work load). The processor is deeply undervolted and running at the lowest frequency(798 mhz).

If anyone have a brilliant idea to drop the processor temp of 2 or 3 degrees in std load, the current processor would do the job.

The fan is driving me crazy. It is far from being excessive, but since i work most of the time in completely quiet environment(library), the fan whispering is prety noticeable. For that reason, i actually work exclusively with my 2 year old Alubook.

Like Justin said, try undervolting it. It's lower the clock and power to the CPU. Easier fix than buying & installing an older processor.

Ok, if you think it'll lower the fans you can try it. I wouldn't recommend it, if I was to balance global warranty, performance, and easy undervolting VS. spending more money on an old processor, installing it, voiding my warranty, and risk of screwing up, I'd chose the prior one.

Since the 778 is a 400mHz fsb is there any jumper or configuration to set ?

Wow, you must have really sensitive ears if the fan noise from the w3v is making you want to swap out the processor. I work in a lot of quiet environments too and hardly ever even notice that it is on. I either have gotten use to it or I listened to too much loud music in my younger years. (Maybe, I'm able to just tune it out. Thanks to all my wife's nagging over the years I've become a pro at it.)

Good luck on whatever you decide. If it bothered me that much, I'd probably sell it and find another lappy with a quieter fan rather than perform brain surgery to insert an older and slower model. But hey, it's your laptop and if that is what you think will make you satisfied with it, I say go for it.

Yeah, I know I didn't add anything of real value to this tread but I just wanted to make sure that people don't think that the w3v has a abnormally loud fan. In my opinion, it doesn't. :asus:

Is there any possibility for Underclocking (Not undervolting) on W3V?

what i do is ramp down my video card. it then gets so cool. if you try this let me know if it works. just go to the ati control panel and choose the power now tab. select the lowest settings in every category. when you want to play a game just ramp them back up.

Sadly no. I just update to the new linux driver that support Ati PowerPlay features and it does cool the beast a little but not enough to keep the fan shut.

    thanks for the tips!
