    Hi all,
I just recieved my new W3V last friday and so far it's great. I plan on writing a fullreview later next week once I've played with it some more but as of right now my only gripe seems to be the 2.5 hour battery life.

Anyways, I'm looking for ways to update my machine so that it runs as smoothly as possible.
The main things I want to try and update arethe processes, palm rest heat, and battery life.

For processes, which ones are people still running? I've had a look at the process library and removed a few from the start-up but which ones do others find useful/useless

For palm heat, I remember a post from someone saying they installed a couple programs that reduced the heat, can't remember what thread it was in though. Anyone know anything about this?

Finally, battery life. Has anyone removed/installed anything to help with battery life?

    Thanks in advance.

PS Any other streamlining suggestions would be helpful or just ideas on how to spiff up the inside (programs) or outside of my machine.

Check the ASUS FAQ and the small piece I wrote about undervolting and controlling the fan(May not be needed though)

I'd also check Bootleg2Go's notebook optimization thread in the Guides forum

They also offer a six cell modular battery for more time, but 2.5 hours seems low. Are you dimming the screen some?

Is speedstep enabled in the BIOS? I would expect the W3 to drain the 8 cell battery in 2.5 hours if the CPU is not throttling back. Software such as MobileMeter http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Oakland/8259/ will show the CPU speed / load. Task Manager will show which processes are using the CPU time.

make sure ur on the right mode for battery, like office and email, also go into the video card properties and make sure powerplay is set to max battery when it is unplugged, this is not done by default. by doing this, and using the office mode when on battery you should get like 4 hrs

Well I've done two of the suggested battery changes. I enabled sppedstep to auto in the BIOS and I set powerplay to optimal battery when unplugged.I also went through the optimization guides and as per the suggested, installec CHC or NHC as it's called now, and unistalled norton (anyone know of a better anti-virus to run? I'm running avast on my 64bit desktop)

Thanks for those suggestions. If anyone has anymore that they found useful or anything specific to the W3V, please let me know. Always looking to learn.

If you wish to steer clear of viruses and spyware, I would suggest using a browser that is not Internet Explorer. Most of the junk is written for it. I personally use Firefox, but there are others like Opera. Also get a firewall. I use the free version of ZoneAlarm which works well for the basic stuff. I would also get your mail on yahoo, msn, google, etc. If you get a virus it is on thier computer not yours. I use the free version of AVG virus. I haven't had any problems yet. Good Luck.
