I think I'm going to order a w3v soon, but I haven't yet decided where to purchase it. I was thinking about getting a modified one from portable one. I don't get the $200 rebate this way, but I do get the better heat dissipation. However, I am worried about not getting the ASUS warranty. What is the P1 warranty like? Also, how does the onsite warranty work? Do I get any accidental damage protection for the LCD? Please respond ASAP, because I only have a few days before the ASUS rebate ends to decide if I'm gonna buy it.

You also lose out on the 3 year Global Asus warranty..... now, how do you figure you're going to get better heat dissipation? What they are doing is using a 7200rpm hard drive which is going to make that worse. I love my 7200rpm notebook drives, but for an everyday system, it produces a more heat and gives you less battery life. With Asus' rebate, you can go out and buy a 7200rpm hard drive and install it yourself..... keep the warranty and have Asus' hard drive as a spare.
Just a reasonable thought. -
Yea, I've heard that Portable One has a W3V with better heat dissipation, but what are they doing to achieve this?
Mine really doesn't produce an unreasonable amount of heat. It gets warm like most laptops do, but it has never been uncomfortable. I can sit with my laptop on my lap for an hour and never feel anything more than warmth. The worst harm this laptop has ever caused me is a sweaty leg after playing age of empires 2 with the laptop on my lap (actually the worst part of that experience was directing an army with the touchpad!).
Buy stock w/ the 3 year warranty and rebate. Add memory and/or replace the hard drive yourself, keep original(s) for warranty work if needed.
(check out my posts total - woohoo). -

That's a crock... if you read their specs they also have a bunch of other things that are better. Asus said they bought an order of off the shelf W3's and are going to swap the hard drives on them. It's all marketing and apparently it's working because they haven't shipped any of them yet, I don't think.
It's a stock W3 and w/ a 7200rpm hard drive. All the little things that Asus does, they elaborate on... like the cooling... the powersaving software (powergear) ... so on and so forth. IT doesn't mean they're lying, but this is a stock W3 bought the same way we buy them... sealed from Taiwan in the configuration we sell. There's nothing they are or even could be doing to it to make it better. I personally just think the way they word things is how Asus' should be worded to begin with as all of the parts of their systems are better and should be focused on more.
Why they do that to void Asus' warranty and keep people from getting that rebate, I don't know. 7200rpm is too much for most people in this system. I put a 7200rpm hitachi in a w3 I gave to my father and heat and battery life are worse than mine at stock... but he's used to it because he had that hard drive in his last M6..... It's not for everyone, especially those who thought the W3 was hot to begin with. -
I measured the case temps of my stock W3v and NONE of the temps got above 100f, the hottest part was the metal part of the hard drive cover on the bottom at 99.42. The keys, touchpad and hand wrest never get to 90f. My measurements were done while running 3Dmark05 an the hard drive during file transfers (30gb's).
It gets warm but not hot. -
Alright, thanks. I'm gonna order a W3V from Geared2play because they are in NY (I am in NJ) and because they seem to have really good customer service from what I've read. Plus they offer a free 512mb stick of ram free. Sorry ProPortable. I might want to buy an optical battery from you, though, since geared2play doesnt seem to sell them.
