Tried turning on my W3V today, pushed the power button, and nothing happened. Machine can turn on in to "CD audio mode" with that button.

Finally remembered about the hard reset switch on the bottom and that turned the computer on fine. Now the normal power button works too.

Anyone had this problem before and know what caused it?

It could have been anything honestly..... a jolt to the system may have logged an error code in the bios.... that reset button just pulls the power from the battery that powers the bios and effectively removes any past errors.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it start to happen often.

Just as a side note - you didn't make any system or software changes recently, have you?

Nope, haven't changed the hardware at all. Softwarewise nothing major either, cept for the routine virus definition updates.

Hmm.. problem popped up again.. seems to only occur after the computer has been turned off for a while.

Does not happen if I try to turn it on right after I shut down.

    Sounds peculiar...
instead of reseting it, what happens if you (for whatever reason) just remove the battery and then put it back in?

Did that the first time it happened. I removed the battery and just had the AC adapter plugged in. No go on that one.

It seems to turn back on after i leave it off for like 2 minutes.

This sounds like it's a hardware problem... perhaps you should try contacting your retailer.

ok.. it seems like its probably something wrong with the power button itself. It'll only function when I open the screen at certain angles.

Yeah I am afraid I might have to try contact Asus for some warranty support, as this is not just some random occurance.

Have you guys seen any returns or heard complaint about this problem?

Seems like the problem has creeped back. They changed the motherboard last time.. but could it be something wrong with the chassis? Do you guys think Asus can/will exchange the whole chassis since the power button seems pretty integrated.

I have the exact same problem on the same notebook. I found the solution after a day of tinkering as my warranty has long expired.

The problem is that the black power button cable gets severed after repeated opening and closing of the lcd screen. Removing this cable from the white box, I was able to start the laptop by connecting the first and third pins.

Going to see if I can find a replacement cable from an electronics surplus depot tomorrow.
