Anyone tried another hdd of another brand on this laptop?
Does it get cooler, or does it has the same "right hand heat" problem some of us are facing?

I mean you could try a seagate.... even at 60gb, I prefer seagate over hitachi..... it should run cooler.

    Thanks,

Samsung gets my vote on this.

I'm a DIY'er for the desktops and have done quite some research 4-5 months ago when I purchased the Samsung Spinpoint drive for use in my Internet wireless router (that is also by Asus, the WL500G). I don't know whether things changed lately but Samsung was rated fairly well in the noise, heat and pricing aspects by that time. Samsung wasn't a well known player in the 2.5" hard drive market but I went on to buy it anyware. The drive has been running 7x24 and it seldom get warm every time I touch it !!!

Over the weekend I'll try swapping the Samsung into my W3V to see whether it helps reducing the heat !!!

My DIY'er experience tell me that Hitachi drives are "hot" !!! I got a 7200rpm Hitachi drive which is as hot as my other 10000rpm WD Raptors.

Well, the 7200rpm drive is certainly going to be hotter.......... but is the rpm's of that samsung you got? The seagates run pretty darn cool for a 5400rpm.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Okay, I did swap my Samsung drive into the W3V, but I swapped the hitachi drive back in after a while. The reason was because the heat has been reduced, but the vibration in the palm area increased as well probably due to the rotational speed of the Samsung drive (M0402H, a 5400rpm one). This is like I gained one thing but losted another at the same time. Also the Samsung was only a 40G so I think I better keep with the Hitachi drive for a while until a fast, cool and steady drive come out (am I day dreaming ?!).

For those who are thinking to change the hard drive in order to reduce heat, vibration is a factor you should consider before committing the change.

I've taken some pictures for those who are interested in the operation.
