Still a very happy W3j owner (since April '06).
However, the silver "paint" on the clicker below the touchpad is discoloring on the left (most used) of the clicker and some white sratch marks are appearing where my wife/kids used their nails to click. The white marks is the pure white plastic underneath the painted uni-bar clicker. Why Asus didn't color impregnated the plastic is beyond me? The feel of the W3j clicker is miles better then my old metal W3v metal reeds, too bad for the paint's coming off! I wish an impregnated part was available as an upgrade -any chance Asus?

Any chance you could upload some images?

here's the best photo I could take, it may not look like much -but signs of things to come...
-
Upon reflection, I think I'll try to find some magnetic clear plastic, cut to shape, to cover the clicker...
-
I have to agree with you that although the sparkly paint job looks nice, I would much rather have a colour that was embeded into the plastic, even if it does mean that the finnish is not as fancy looking. It would just wear better.

or you could do what this guy did, might look good in carbon fiber finnish

wow, that sucks...
I own a W3J (although it's been nothing but pissing me off lately) I sure will keep this in mind (ie, use the mouse or double tap instead of clicking the uni-bar)
Why didn't ASUS stick with the metal cutouts? like the ones found in the Z70VA? I thought that looked really cool..... and metal should be more durable... -
wooo... when I first looked at that, I thougth the dark part was shadow. I thought the only problem was the white scratches. That's pretty noticeable! I wouldn't call it a big deal, but it's probably going to happen to everyone.

Not me..Bluetooth mouse baby! I'm not sure why everyone is not using one -
I can't seem to find the magnetic plastic film that I've seen as palm rest on laptop. I visited PC World (here in London, UK) and they didn't have it or even new they existed -

how aboout setting up the touchpad so that you don't have to use the uni-bar clicker at all. cause that's what i did and i haven't used it for days. i can even highlight text and pictures just through the touchpad.
but i am getting a mouse. any suggestions for a bluetooth mouse besides the logitech V270. -

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
There are lots of fun options and uses to be found in the synaptics touchpad driver software - get there via Mouse in Control Panel. Browse through the tree there to find all the different options that can be used, including customizing the tap pressure and vert/horiz scroll areas.
Highlight/select is tap & drag, similar to Lclick and drag w/ mouse; works best for small areas onscreen since the touchpad is limited size for the drag part. -
Mine is wearing even worse than that....maybe I'll take a pic tonight and post.
Not a big deal for me really - gives it that broken in look -
Thank you for the warning. I think I'll apply some clear film on my clickbar too.

Hmm, from the picture, it dont seem to me that the paint is coming off. It looks to me as tho its from the oil in you hand. I have that issue over the hard drive cuz it gets warm. I dont know about the w3j, but is it warm under the button? Also lotioned hands might add to the problem. =)

The "shadow" is the paint being polished and wearing out by finger use -therefore, technically not actually "coming off".
I just tried to clean it a bit more (a bit too much actually) and now the "shadow" has spread a bit to the left
This is after 4 months and, maybe, on average 2 hours a day (or 240 hours of use)

what is a good film to put on it?

apologies for the lack of info before but here is how i set up my touchpad so i don't have to use the click bar. first open the application for the Synaptics Pointing Device found on task bar on the bottom right screen (looks ike a mini touch pad). set double click speed to you liking, enable ClickLock (but i never really use it, mostly i double tap then drag my finger to highlight). click on Device Settings tab and click on Settings. Here you will find Overview, Tapping, Buttons, etc. options to configure your touchpad. hope this helps.

Seriously though - I'm sure from all the traffic, finger oils/grease...etc...etc. and it's more of a discoloration than actually coming off.
To whoever asked...the button doesn't really get warm - and the rests on either side are still impeccable. -
the forward and reverse buttons are the only thing on the microsoft mouse that would make me get it instead of the v270.
as for power management, my logitech v270 is insane, i'm still using the batteries that came with it and i got it near the beginning of july. i've got some rechargeable AA's lined up for when they finally die.
just for the record, i've always hated wireless, the idea of my mouse running out of batteries just didn't work for me. the reason i went for the v270 is because the w3j's ports are all on the sides and i hated having a usb plug sticking out around where i use the mouse. i didn't like the idea of a silly little wireless receiver sticking out either, so bluetooth was the perfect solution.
