I fiddled around with stuff and I found that I could clock the cpu at 50% while in AC mode. At least this is what the system properties tell me. I think this is right tho becasue generally things are a little slower.

I did this by checking auto performance on power4 gear and then using the button on the w3j that switches the power4 gear modes. I switched it to quiet office mode. Before I was trying to actually configure the modes in power4 gear but I guess that doesnt work.

Switching the modes(using the button or the power4 gear tray tool) while on battery seems to change the cpu speeds properly but I dont think you can alter the cpu speed at all.

Anyways I was kinda interested in this because I often leave my laptop on at night and it doesnt really need all the power that this baby puts out so I might as well "underclock" it. I don't know if this is useful info to anyone else but I was curious so Im sure other w3j owners are too!
    thanks
    Dan

Does mobiemeter support the Core Duo? If not, it may be unable to report the clock accurately. Just a thought.

Get your REAL CPU speed by pressing Windows key + Pause break. It shows the current CPU speed at the time you pressed those buttons. NHC doesnt show the real speed for me. It shows 997MHz even though everything is on max. But really the speed is 1.83GHz.

I find that my W3J is almost useless under Quiet Office mode. Everything loads and runs so slow that i have to wait for 1 minutes just to load MSN Messenger! Is it normal??

Are we able to redefine the CPU performance for each mode?

Which mode do you guys usually use when on battery?

i am not sure about teh W3J but on my A8J i almost exclusively use the quiet office mode. I even play counter strike source in quiet office to keep cpu temps low and easily get 60 - 70 fps

my cpu in quiet office runs at 54% of its 1.6Ghz

oh i found the problem. Somehow my quiet office mode was set as 25%. That's why it's so slow.
I set to 50% and it's running okay.

    Thanks zydus!
BTW, do you find 25% CPU acceptable for any kind of use?

Asus only put 25% in the Battery Saving P4g profile, and that's really the point; 50% is usually adequate for most minor uses (WP, Net, etc). Yes, perfomance takes a giant hit (what else did I expect running my z63 at 325MHz, after all?), but a trade had to be made to get the better batt life when I was flying crosscountry or something and needed to have 4+ hrs of work time.

Well, I got tired of that and switched to NHC for undervolting and freq control. Cool thing now is that I can get 4+ hrs of batt time using undervolt and custom dynamic switching running at 700Mhz min and going up to 1.73 as needed. Best of both worlds, really - better performance than stock P4G Office Mode, and same batt life as before! OK, part of that is not having a dedicated gpu sucking away power, but still....

People have reported that NHC has some issues with CoreDuo's, but you can search around here to get details on it's (restricted) improvements due to multiplier lockouts or on RMClock's greater improvements on batt life and system performance.

25% when im on battery is perfect for web browsing and ms word and online games. I rather save battery than complain about firefox taking 10 more seconds to start up
