Are you using the latest audio driver from the Asus website?
I recall John Ratsey saying that the most recent driver appears to boost the volume a little more...

If you do use the new audio drivers. Could you check that if you have earphone plugged in, if there's any loud crunching sound when windows boots up?

Try the Volume filter in FFDShow's audio decoder. AC3Filter should work too.

And don't forget to open the Realtek Sound Manager, wind up the volume controls to maximum and press the round button on the control panel to enable the equaliser. Without pressing this, changing the volume controls has no effect (which caught me out for a long time).

    LOL John.

Yeup try the AC3 filter and turn up the gain to max. You can also try the SRS WOW that you can try out on Winamp and if you like it you can pay something like 10 bucks and get it to work on your whole system. It does wonders, boosts the bass up really nicely and clears up the sound.

Also put your Realtek Sound Manager equalizer to Powerful, that makes the sound really deep and loud.

    Cheers,
    Mike
