News flash to all you guys going nuts about memory upgrades:
Go ahead and stick in the new ram.
If you ever get a problem and have to go to asus for their warantee, open up your laptop and take out the extra ram you put in.

Man, talk about being busy for the weekend and not read this forum for a couple of days. Geez people. Things are getting a little heated in here.
In all due respect to Proportable, G2P, and any resellers reading these forum like a hawk. What I've learn early on is this, to me reseller is no different than car salesman (no dis-respect guys). I've been in the industry myself so I have an idea how things operate.
The best form of information is get it directly from the horses mouth. Which is contact Asus directly for their warranty policy. If Startec post they offer x warranty while g2p offer y warranty, so be it. It is up to good faith if **** hit the fan, it is up to them, not asus to be liable for the warranty in which they have stated. As long as you have all of that in writting, heck look them up in a year is something happen.
Again, keep in mind this is good faith and if they be around in one year to handle your warranty. This is one of the pro and con from purchasing from smaller reseller vs Dell or Gateway who handle their warranty directly. You get better pricing, but in return there are risk.
If you can't take the risk, go buy a DELL or Toshiba. If you are bold and feel the company you are dealing with is legit, then buy from them.
With that said, there are good and bad with most company out there. Even if the company on resellerrating with a 10.0 score, they will have some bad experiences with certain people. YOu can't satify everyone in this world.

Now can we continue with what the thread originally was intended for?!

Hey Guys.
Just Pre-ordered the Asus W3V from Justin over at ProPortable! Ordered the (optical bay) 2nd battery from him too. I have to say thank you to everybody on this forum as well as Justin as I have personally taken much of his time via email as well as instant messenger. I am very excited about the free wireless access point included in the order as well! This is going to be my first laptop purchase ever....have been waiting for a great contender to my desktops, and portability was a big deal for me. I'll let you all know how everything turns out when it gets here.
Thanks again Justin,

Your a genius, great minds think alike, but i sort of beat you to that conclusion earlier on in the thread. By the way i know you were looking into the overclock thing with z71v. We just finsihed that too and it was posted. The only issue is that the closer you get to the treshhold the worse the 3dmark score gets. I tried your omega drivers and all they did was hike the score up by 100 points. I like your thread about the leeky battery on n.f. I actually crapped my self when i started reading. I think that was you....Ye -

I wish i can tell you anything about the x700 but i have not tried one and probably will not since they are not yett made by asus whitebook. Let me know if you had the same issue with overclocking the 6600 as i did (the issue where score decreases as you get closer to threshhold). Maybee its normal but its the first time i ever saw something like that.

Sorry i did it again. Ok back to the original drama. WHo here thinks the w3 is going to spew battery acid and who here thinks asus is full of i$ht with this whole warranty thing for ensemble. Interested to see how a manufacturer who is known for the best support and fastest warranty going to enforce something like this onto mad as hell customers who paid like 2 grand for a notebook. A satisfied customer will tell 3 friends a dissatisfied customer will tell 300. I think Dell should be a fine example of this rule...not in a good way -

Speaking of the matter. What do people think of clevo? Clevo is the manufacturer to release a laptop with the x800 and 6800gt months ago. They also make most of the line sager has to offer. They are the only odm to offer 17" lcd and a variety of other products. They also make dell... Justin this question is for you to "smell the coffee"... or maybee this forum is the wrong place to ask. Escuzee if i made someone here feel like a gineau pig.

First off, Geared2play [?]
Now. Global warranty clarifications. OK. Now it's " We don't exactly know what's on the boat." Hmmm.
Let's say the "less nice" W3V arrives stateside and ASUS has to keep the shipment. Any chance that the 2nd shipment will be corrected with the aluminum palmrest like USA thought they were getting? Someone smack the purchasing guy in the head.

I can't wait until this entire warranty saga is over and all the nerds can sleep again. I think that we can all agree that asus is reputable company and is know for taking very good care of their customers (who ever they may be). Asus obviously wanted to make a product that would last along time, both in a standard stock system configuration and as an upgradeable machine.
Why make a system that supports 2gigs of memory and only use 512 megs in one of 2 slots. Why make a system that supports up to a 2.2 gig Pentium M, and future chips that don't exist. Why offer a system that has a hot swap tray that supports an additional hard drive. And so on and so on. I understand that each country orders a custom system for there specific country.
I guess what I am saying is that Asus loves upgrades, and would love you to upgrade your unit until it is the ultimate system and all of that. They just don't want to be responsible for any upgrades that compromise the work that they have done. I think that is pretty understandable.
I think that there are plenty of smart people on this forum. I think that most of you have the ability to be creative when it comes upgrade issues.

To answer that..... I don't think so. If it doesn't come over that way, the most likely reason would be on a whole they decided not to offer it. Just hold up and wait and let us find out what's what.

Alittle late posting in here, but thought I would add to this.
Been trying to keep up with this whole mess and must say that Justin seems to be pretty much right with the post he has made here. Really no need for me to add to what he has posted. I think what he has said pretty much sums it up.
Being able to upgrade the laptop after the warranty is up is what they were thinking of. That is why they made it so you could add to it.
And just incase anyone wants to know. I am a Asus laptop builder/reseller. But 95% of my sales are in my area. I do have a few here and there on the web, but I don't sell on the web to much. Will try to help out with questions when I can. -
Sorry if this is a digression on the thread, just wanted to add a comment... I bought my M6Ne from Geared2Play, and I've been very happy about that decision. A couple months ago I had a problem with the unit (power surge while plugged in at a hotel seemed to fry something) and he made all the necessary contacts to get the warranty RMA going. Asus dropped the ball a couple times on the actual repair service (took 3 trips back to their facility before they finally replaced the motherboard and fixed the problems), but Geared2Play was there every step of the way to make sure things went right, and I'm back up and running with the M6 now.
So, a couple points to remember - sh*t does happen, when you're traveling, or otherwise. Being covered by somebody's warranty can really save your bacon, but sometimes the warranty alone isn't enough; the factory service may not actually fix the problem (at least, not right away, not the first time). Your reseller is probably the more important factor in the equation, as far as where you're going to get help.
If you're out globetrotting when something bad happens, you better have the tools/parts to return the machine to stock condition with you. A small screwdriver, the original RAM if you replaced it, etc... Me, I'm going to add a surge suppressor to my travel kit...
(I actually had a suppressor before, but I fried that in Europe, and hadn't replaced it yet. Duh, a surge suppressor designed for 120VAC really doesn't like to be plugged into a 220VAC outlet. Silly me.)

Thanks for the vote of confidence. You didnt have to. Mr Canada was just talking out of his butt. I dont think he read between the lines. If he did then rudeness would not be his depiction of me. In case anybody was wondering highlands notebook fried from using a targus universal ac adaptor. I do remember
So the lesson here is please buy the asus original adaptors or you may have to enjoy 3 tripps to asus. They are cheap and certified. A little extra to add to the experience in asus supports defence. They did take 3 tripps to fix his stuff. They picked up the package return label via overnight twice and they send it back overnight three times. Overall it took 6 tripps (there and back). 5 of those tripps were paid by asus via overnight. Didnt have to do much convincing there. Their rma lady is very sweet and cares alot about the reseller as well as angry customer. The 3 tripps it took them to fix it still ammounts to the same time it takes to rma something with quanta or compal (hope neither have reps reading this forum). Highland i am glad to elp. As i said before i appreciate all the biz you reffered. I almost did send you a brand new barebone but @lb$rt seemed pretty confident and promised he would ship one if the third time went heywire as well. By the way check out highlands page about overclcoking system ram. Highland a link please? Not sure if it still applies to ddr2 but now that we are on the topic of memory upgrades and voiding warranties maybee this is appropriate. -

Hi. A first time poster here but long time watcher. I have opted to order a W3V and am one of the people on the pre-order list. I thank you all for helping me choose Asus. Definitely the best value for the money. Due to the new Asus update I, like most of you, will need to install the ram myself and cannot find a user manual. Is this a simple thing like just removing a panel on the bottom and inserting the ram or is it a complex exercise in engineering to do this? Thanks.
-
Well, yeah, but it's a little more complicated than that in terms of dissipating static, etc. It's good to know what you're doing and what sorts of stupid things you can do that will fry your computer.
I am one escroww -
It's pretty simple, but you will need to know what you're doing. I'm not sure about where to get a W3V user's manual, but I would suggest reading up online about how to add memory in general - find a number of good online tutorials so you know the important DO's and DON'T's. This is very important.

"Egg on face" AND an answer all in one post...I couldn't have asked for anything more. I'm kidding...alright I have one more small series of questions for you guys (Bill and/or John), and please just give me some nice straight answers. What happens to those who either ordered or already received a V6V system with the memory upgrades only option from you guys prior to Monday?...do they somehow escape the new ruling and still have their 2 year Global warranty intact because of their date of purchase and because your site mislead them?...or are they Scr%wed and now only covered by you? If they have lost their Global warranty's, what are you guys (Startech) doing for them? I mean I assume you're going to bring this new fact to each and everyone of their attentions right? But what else are you going to do for them?...the only reason I ask you this and feel it's completely relevant is because I could have easily been one of those people...and so too could have many of others in this forum.
I applaud you for removing the option page from your website...but lets be honest here, you were basically forced too. You really shouldn't have ever had it there to begin with unless you were 100% sure it was valid information. By keeping it up like that all that time (especially after the first time I asked you about it) and not really knowing whether it was accurate or not for certain wasn't a very honest thing to do.
To all of you out there saying "read between the lines" and "You're fine if you just put the system back to the way it was when It left the factory/ASUS"...my response to you is, not everyone going to Startech's website and ordering online was/is privy to that or the information in this forum...they would have no way of knowing that they'd have to do something like that in order for the warranty to remain valid if they ever had to send it in. So It should be looked at from the angle of them having no other knowledge outside of what Startech's website left them with when they finished their purchase...and If they ordered the system in such a way that they didn't retain a 512MB chip of RAM in the "right" slot, for instance someone who configured a V6V with a 1 GB stick of RAM in each of the available slots (2GB total), (an option that was available) and who doesn't have the know-how or ability to remove either of the sticks (especially the one that comes in the slot the factory uses/ships with it in)...then whether they knew to return it to it's regular configuration or not before sending it in, wouldn't make a difference because they still wouldn't have the proper RAM to put it back in It's stock configuration...Which means they're scre*ed! That's where the misleading comes into effect...there was no indication of any of this having to take place in order to keep the 2 year ASUS Global warranty (intact) that they had listed everywhere associated with that option on their website. So the people selecting to upgrade their memory and ordering from their site in any configuration under that option were being mislead, period! That's the only point I was trying to make...and the only thing I wanted clarified by them before I purchased anything. Once I found out how things really "work" and decided not to order from startech, I then took offense to the fact that I COULD HAVE easily selected that option on a V6V directly through their website and already received my laptop thinking full well I still have/had my ASUS Global warranty, when I wouldn't (which was/is of key importance to me)...and then that tons of others were also being led to believe the exact same thing by selecting that option...and that's what continued to keep me annoyed with them.
Basically...I feel that It shouldn't be my duty or the consumers duty to confirm whether or not a trusted ASUS authorized retailer is ACCURATE in listing/offering something like the presence of an ASUS Global warranty on one/any of their product options...I feel it's the trusted ASUS retailer's responsibility to have ACCURATE information listed in several important places on their website (Like the final check out page) regarding something as important as a Global warranty policy. As a reminder...even though I shouldn't have to second guess something they listed, In this case I did, and when I did, I asked them about it and they wouldn't give me an answer...which is basically what sparked this whole situation...at least my part in it anyhow. I hope that clears up why I said the things I said, and why I was so annoyed with Startech and their actions and responses.
Now that everything is clear...and everyone's said what they've said...Bill/John, let us all know honestly how you're going to deal/proceed with the situation I've asked you about above...and maybe...depending on your RESPONSE...you'll be able to wipe the majority of that egg away and start fresh from here on out with everyone.
PS, Sencha's not a lady, she's a woman...and If you'd have paid closer attention to her posts, you would have known that all along []
Just so It's clear, no matter how this post comes across, At this point in time I harbour no hard feelings toward anyone [8D]

]... I think you should be one of the best informed customers, EVER! [

Just bustin..... Anyway....
Let me give you this much... Asus hasn't made anything official yet, but it's my understanding that once this is officailly posted, no dealer can touch these units. Before I posted that information, I was 100% clear that we could "add" ram... but in no way were we to "swap" it... Or in other words, by some of it back... We always knew the customer needed the original package.
Asus knows the RAM issue is a sticky one... but Taiwan wants all or nothing when talking about the "global" warranty... and the US wants to be crystal clear about the packages people are buying. Lets just say... it's easier to say.. you can't do anything... and tell a customer, you're going to get a sealed unit blah blah blah... than.... well they can't touch anything, but they can screw around with ram, or do this or that.... Asus has been very busy in the last few days and I think it's over finalizing this warranty and deciding what to do from here. But as far as having us or anyone else "add" ram, before Asus posts this warranty, you're not looking at your warranty being voided. However, once everything is announced and a start date is set.... companies who do something outside of what that policy states very well may void the warranty on all sales made after that start date (and would probably make up for it by offering their own warranty in place incase this happened)... Then it's up to Asus and it's my understanding that they don't care who it is, but they won't continue to suppply them with systems to sell. But I think the new policy (until it's in writting on their site, I can't endorse it completely).. but it's meant to get people to straighten up.... not to lose dealers. That is just what will happen to anyone who doesn't follow the rules. Up till now, they have been crystal clear and I think within the next week or so, things will be crystal.
Then we have this whole thing with what Asus said will be a "bonus year" in the warranty to dealers they set up as "authorized ensemble dealers". Like I said before...... the where to buy list isn't just getting it's name changed... Asus is taking a handful of us that understand the systems and will follow whatever rules they put forth into this new section. Now, I don't know if this bonus year thing is going to be........ say for ever on their entire line..... or if it will be a common monthly rebate type thing...
Like.. buy a V6 between May 1st and May 31st and get an extra year warranty...
That part just isn't crystal to me. Because, to me... if the only people who will be aloud to sell the units, can't modify them, whats the point of seperating "authorized dealers" vs "just who sells them".... and there fore.... why make it a bonus year.. and not just... well if you buy this, now you're getting 3 years.... Know what I'm saying? I just think someone left out something and I'm guessing on of things I said above may actually be what they mean. So, I the thing that makes sense the most is say.. instead of giving a $150 rebate on the S5.... they might be offering an extra year warranty which is probably worth that much.
Anyway... thats all the makes sense to me right now.... I can tell you what I've been told...... but then we still obviously need to make heads or tails out of whats left.
Hold in there.
Thanks,
Justin

Cal,
To answer your question directly, we have contacted everyone who has purchased a V6 or W5 and have confirmed with them that they were aware of their warranty.
We were pretty sure that all of our customers who had bought custom configured laptops were aware of and comfortable with their warranty. But, to be sure, Bill had me contact every one and confirm this last Monday. Just so you know we do not accept any orders without a 2 way exchange with them either by phone or by email. We are very comfortable with how we have presented the options our customers have.
Only one person had upgraded memory only and he figured it was easier to return the unit to us for warranty than to send the unit to Asus anyway.
We are operating on what we have been told over the last 9 months. We will not set our sales and production policies based on what others have said on this forum. We hope to have a policy from Asus in writing in the near future and will abide by whatever policy Asus produces. Until then, those who are looking for a custom solution and are happy with a Star warranty will continue to have that option from Star Tech.

sorry for this post, I thought I was editing the previous one - w3 still tops for elegance and good size at least in my opinion, except that the 512mb memory may not be enough. I just don't know yet if I am willing to let go of the 2 year asus global warranty in lieu of an add'l memory.

Just so you know, I don't know if I mentioned this, but the price didn't officially drop til late yesterday. Everyone else is just lucky, because Asus was getting pissed that they set their price at 2000 when they specifically told them it was 2100. The drop it price comes directly from Taiwan where it looks like they have already pumped up production to a level that could absorb the cost.
