how does it stack up against other laptop makers:
    sony, IBM, fujitsu in particular.

The reason im asking is because it seems that with the asus computers you can often get much more specs wise for your money and im wondering whats the catch?

I had owned a w3v for about 8 months and the build quality is top notch. The only issue I have had is that the paint on the palm rest area began to show some darkening within a couple of months. However nothing can stay new forever.

I would say that the build quality on the w3v is on par with Sony and the better IBM machines. With both Sony and IBM you are paying additional money for the name recogintion.

The w3v is built much more solidly than the fujitsu laptops that I have used, which seem to have more flex.

    IMHO

thank you for your input. I have read all the reviews and everyone seems to agree that asus w3v build quality is top notch, its just that I have been hearing fomr a few freinds at school that the reason asus is cheaper is because of the sub par build quality.

The thing is I want a computer that is not gonna fall apart after a year or 2 ...thats my biggest worry!

well the way I see it is that im getting way better specs with the w3v for the price then with many other more recognizable name brands. is it because those name brands are higher quality? or is it because they are just charging more for the name? this is the problem i find myself asking before spending 2300+ dollars on a laptop.

Your friends don't know what they are talking about. They obviously have never had the oppotunity to use a w3v. Best laptop that I have ever used. I would recommend that you not take any stock tips from those friends of yours.

The only problem with Asus is that they keep upping their game. I find myself being totally jealous of the v6va owners, eventhough I prefer widescreens and my w3v more than meets my graphics needs. I'm thinking of buying one for my wife for Valentines Day just so I can borrow it form time to time.

    Jinx......

Yeah... buy your wife a V6va for Valentines day.... you think you'll get to use it...... I think she might end up asking for a divorce and end up taking your W3v also!........ As much as any holiday is a great time to sell anything.... any guy who buys his wife or girlfriend electronic devices (ie: computers and computer accessories) are idiots and take this from me... I've done it.

Basically you have a good heart...... instead of wasting your money on jewelry, you think she'll get more use out of a computer....... but in "womanese" it's like saying.... "I don't want to spend time with you and really couldn't think of something sweet, so here... keep yourself occupied with this."

It's becasue they are all mainly marketing companies and idiots buy what they see on tv and in magazines... therefore people will pay for crap because they don't think it's crap and don't know there's better stuff out there.

.... it's as simply put as it could be. Don't look at the price, because honestly you could get the systems bumped way up and some people say the opposite - they're too expensive...... but all I can say is 99% of everyone who's every bought an Asus system has felt it's been the best system they've ever had. That comes from my five plus years of importing and selling them..... and my long-term presence here on this forum as well......

um.... nothing really..... if you hold it in your hands you'll see the quality difference...... try to notice the details...... like the touchpad and the battery...... and the hinge and the subtle hotkeys... Notice the screen on and if you really wanted... see if you can try out some games that you might be interested in.... Bring them along if you can.-

not always true. I got away with getting my gf a new HP PPC for christmas. She is an organizational nut and she fell in love with the **** ball game on my Dell Axim. She loves the thing and uses it daily. I got lucky on that one.

See... sometimes that can work....... but Valentines and Birthdays are a REALLY bad time to give the whole electronics thing...... on Christmas you've got a little leeway because there are usually more gifts - even if that one's the most expensive.... even if it's only a sweater - there's usually more.

.... you can't deny me... I've got this down... unfortunately.

Sorry, but your friends don't know jack and they must be Dell fans. "Dude my Dell is the shizzle~!"

    haha, sorry.

You will be amazed at it's quality. I mean it. It's SOLID, beautiful, and POWERFUL.

    GET ONE.

Oh and did I mention the sexy bag that comes with it? Oh yes, I said sexy bag. The bag included is freakin' nice as hell and it comes with a wireless mouse and an updated version of AsusDVD, which I jacked from a friend of mine for my Z70Va.

    :D

    Cheers,
    Mike

Justin is right on both counts -- never buy a woman electronics unless she specifically asks for them, and ASUS quality is tops. My girlfriend has a Compaq, and my best friend has an eMachines, and the ASUS is worlds better than either one. It's at least as good as IBM, but you're not paying extra for the Big Blue Branding on it -- that's where the savings come from, NOT from inferior quality. Maybe in 10 or 20 years when everyone in the world knows how good ASUS is, they'll double their prices for the name cachet, but for now ASUS is the best bargain you're gonna find!

.... I'll try not to let it all go to my head..... but unfortunately I know it all too well and have myself learned from my mistakes..... I just don't want anyone else to have to experience it.

...now, don't get me wrong - if you want to buy a laptop or two.... just let me know.. but don't give it to her till like the 15th or something.

I just figured it out... it's really not a "lack of love" thing.. it's more along the lines of powertools and appliances.... everyone knows not to get those for the g/f or wife..... because they think it's really not for them, but for their guy that's getting it...... Basically... I think you can only pull it off if they REALLY want it..... and you can ignore it... if she pulls it out of the box and you grab it away from her.... you'll be packing your bags!
