I have found two threads specifc to this question on this forum and another. Seems many get down to this choice.
The V6v is similiar to the V70 but just preconfigured. No s-video but a 15 inch screen with higher resolution and a sleek design. 2x dvd Burner.
The W3v is a different sleek design with the aluminum accent and wxga screen. s-video and smaller footprint. Don't forget the faster 8x DVD burner.
Reviews on both machines say each is probably the best machine in its class out there... but they are in the same class![]()
I will be doing powerPoint at times with this machine using a Mitsubishi XD450u which is an XGA projector but will take up to an SXGA signal. (Suppose to match up screen resolution for best performance image). So both machines should produce quaility images for the presentation.
SXGA (V6v) should allow more screen image of spreadsheets, etc but probably not significant????
W4v has a $200 rebate. Heat issues seem to be inconclusive but BIOS changes and changing clock speeds can be performed if needed.
Besides the above I think the machines are pretty much the same (USA configuration). If ASUS had made the V6v a 15" WSXGA it would be a straight forward choice but again the W3v probably would not exist then.
USES: PowerPoint, dvd presentations, office homework (Spreadsheets, web design, desktop publishing, genera; office tasks. I currently use a 2gb Dell desktop with a 17" standard monitor. Need the Notebook for taking home office work and off property presentations.
I am just too detailed of a person to easily choose between the two. RATS!!!

well if u need the higher resolution then the v6v is the obvious choice, otherwise i'd get the w3v.

These are totally 2 different computers, not comparable. If I was going to do presentations, I'd go with a bigger and sharper screen. V6V all the way. Also if you're doing presentations with sound, I hear the W3 sound isn't that great and very low volume (numerous threads on problems with the W3).

I think you should go with the W3V, because with a widescreen you can fit more window space on your computer. So if you have spreadsheets of presentations open, you can have more then one. Also if a projecter is only displaying at XGA it doesn't matter which notebook you go with. Lastly, the W3V is simply a beautiful machine and I love mine.

Interesting quote from another forum:
"OK. I have seen both in store and tested both. I also hesitated between the two and I have come down to the W3V. The biggest problem with the v6v are the heat and the drive which is a low profile and cannot be replaced. The heat actually jeopardizes the stability of the computer. It cannot go through 3dmark without crashing if you don't add a fan to it." -
Well obviously, that V6V was probably messed up or exagerated, but come on, Asus would not put out a product that was known to lock up. I haven't seen any issues regarding problems with the V6V. It's just like a Z70V, but in a lighter chasis- same excellent screen. On the other hand, (nothing against the W3, but...) you can see a whole bunch of threads on problems with it. From screen, light leakage, heat, sound, etc... and no, I'm not making it up.

There is a reason this years refresh of the M6ne (Z70v) doesn't come as a regular ratio screen here in the US........... and it's because of the V6. The V6 is everything the Z70v is, and lighter........ The only two things it lacks are s-video, a port bar connector and you can't get the 8x dual layer drives in the super slim format..... I think the thinness of the V6 is for style anyway and you don't always gets all the same features when you go smaller.......... yet some people will do anything to get the smallest system they can.
In defense of the W3, don't knock it unless you have it. The two biggest knockers of the W3 physically had bad screens and both love the units after the screen was replaced... and as for light leakage.... you might want to actually read the threads because there is a difference between using brightness levels too high for the ambient light and general light leakage that you'll find on junky lcd panels. -
Don't get me wrong, I really wanted to get the W3. After a long time of research and reading various forums, I decided not hold off for a bit. I'm not trying to make a "I hate W3" fan club, I just read those threads- I didn't start them. I'm sure there are many other peeps who love it too and they chimed in on all of those threads.

That comment was from me. I looked at both of them in Taiwan, land of Asus. Ran 3dmark05 on both and the V6V gets definitely way hotter than the w3v to the point where it crashed. I actually bought an A6Va not available in the US for myself but wanted to look for another one for a friend. The 8x super slim drive does not exist. At least not with Asus. It isn't a regular sized drive. The hard drive on the V6V is right under the right hand rest making it very hot and uncomfortable to use. The w3v felt a lot more comfortable but is not as good looking as the v6v in my opinion. For me, for size and functionality I would go for the w3v. Just FYI, the w3v-M750 runs for $1400 and the v6v-M750 for $1500 tax included here.
Forgot to add... size does matter when it comes to heat. I paid special attention to this as I had an overheating Sager P4 notebook previously. I compared a bunch of notebooks with equivalent characteristics for heat management. the w5a gets hotter than the w5v despite the x600. The v6v is hot because it is so thin, there is almost no air allowed around the CPU/GPU. the z70v (aka M6Q) runs much cooler than any of these because of it's size. I also looked at the Acer Aspire 5500. Way Hot! -

No, it's just the number of actual people in the world with any W3 issue all seem to find a forum to spread what went wrong....... people who are satisfied, ween themselves off the forum and the majority of people with them don't even post anymore. The BS about bad W3's is bad enough coming from people unwilling to realize they may have gotten a bad hard drive or a bad screen...... but it seems when we get their butt in gear and tell them they shouldn't be experiencing that and to call Asus........ they did it fixed and make one little comment about how everything is better..... and never post again.... yet their threads never go away.
In regards to the V6 vs W3 though.... something was wrong with that V6 you used.. it should get the same numbers as the W3 and certainly not freeze up. -
I looked at many many computers and came down to the w3 vs the v6 too. I went for the v6, on which I am currently typing this - on my deck outside - in sunny LA. I wouldn't be able to do that with the w3's reflective screen.
After setting up the power4 gear utility, I can say that heat isn't a problem. Yes, the right side palm rest does get a little warm, but it's not bad at all. That was a big concern for me. I think if you do things that really push the processor, it will get quite a bit warmer - however - these are not typically things that require your hand to be on the keyboard so much (you're not speed typing). They tend to be mouse based or wacom based applications. (video editing, photoshop, 3d, etc.) Is that a rationalization? Maybe.
The thin factor and the weight is killer. It truly has put me in a whole "portability" frame of mind my Sony Vaio never did.
If I had any complaints so far, it would be that I do wish they had put a usb port on the left side. Plugging the mouse in on the right, tends to make the mouse cable a bit prone to getting in the way of the mouse. No biggie, but there's a complaint for you. Also, having been used to the VAIO's soft edges, I am actually finding the front edge of the V6 a bit sharp... I have to relearn my typing position as my right forearm is pressing into it kinda hard. -

I wonder if some of the reported heat problems, etc on these machines are being reported on machines not available in the US that may be running faster speeds on the HD as well as 2gb+.
I assume you can only get the W3v and V6v in the current 1.86ghz and 60/5400 HD in the US (Ensamble). I found some speed test online but found that they were with machines outside the US and confgured with faster processors. -

I wouldn't even say that. I know that one widely reported "problem" was with someone who put a 7200rpm drive in their system...... then when one person says "my palm is hot" ... everyone else whose palm gets warm, like that system should... jump in and say "yeah, mine is getting hot too" ...... A faster cpu could certainly lead to the issue, but it's more about prolonged use and heavy graphics/gaming ...... as the cpu, gpu and hdd are all being taxed heavily and that power creates heat....... it's a fact of life.
There just really isn't a good level benchmark most of these people are going off of..... it's purely subjective commentary. -
I checked that out and the drives offered on the ones I tested were Hitachi 4200rpm with P-M 750 (1.86GHz). The laptops are left on all day since they are in stores for demos so I do believe that they are hotter than for normal use. In my opinion it is a stress test. All the retailers and a few taiwanese forums have also reported heat issues with the V6V. I think it is a known problem and it is not that bad if you don't count on using the lappy intensively. For me, having a 30 degree C temperature difference between the left and right hand was unacceptable. Even less the crash when running 3D benchmarks.

Sorry got carried away on the Z70 and V6 similarities. Forgot that the V6 has a lower res screen.

The V6 doesn't have a lower resolution screen... it's SXGA+. How do you figure?
-
Ok. no widescreen... picky... picky...
-

haha... well you'd be surprised at what people pick up on when they're debating what system to get. Just that one post will probably give us a week of emails and phone calls saying people don't really want the V6 because it has "lower res" .......
So I just sort of wanted to pick up on that.
W3v vs V6v...again
