Does anybody use his W5 with external LCD panel? I do it, and I don't understand why I can't set 1280*1024 mode on my W5's CRT chanel. I could choose 1024*768, or 1280*768 or 1280*800 but there isn't 1280*1024. This is the first annoying thing. I've refreshed all of drivers for latest, but nothing.
On the other hand finally I chose 1280*800 and ticked the "keep the screen proportion" (it isn't sure that this is the exact English name of it, but I use hungarian version of XP) and I hoped this would help. The result depressed me. The LCD panel shows me that the resolution is 1280*960 (instead of 1280*1024) and I show thick black bars on top and bottom of the picture and poor quality. Just like movie on TV.
Has anybody same experience? Might I have to change my W5 under warranty?
(My previous M5N had an excellent picture on CRT port at 1280*1024.)

(And I have some other problems about BT and RF mouse, but those are less disturbing.)

Sorry, I cant help. But I am curious to learn about your other experiences with your w5600a?
Is it noisy / does the fan kick in easily?
    How is overall-build-qualitiy?
Did you try a memory-upgrade? (more than 768mb?)

You want to use only a widescreen format when setting your res. Also, the screen alwasys looks best at it's native res. So, if you deviate from that at all, you're not going to be experiencing the screen as it should be. The biggest thing is, if you're not using a widescreen res, but you select to keep the proportion... you're going to have a stretched out screen and it's going to look like a 4:3 ratio tv show on a 16:9 ratio tv....... some people think that looks good.... I think it looks horrible.

    Thanks,

Is it possible that the integrated video does not support 1280x1024? I think that's the culprit.

Where'd you get this? Because I've got a W5 here in front of me and the res is correct and everything is great..... the driver from asus is all you need.

You see it right. It doesn't. And I don't understand the reason of it.
As Proportable said the best result on TFT panel is in native resoluition. And I expected that I will be able to use 1280*1024. But I can't use it because this res. isn't in the supported res. list. This is the question whether it will be in at any time or not. I never could imagine that an external port doesn't support this resolution. It is sad enough. And it is curious that there are many other "not wide" resolution f.e. 1024*768. So I think (or rather hope) they forgot this resolution and it will be supplied in close future by some driver upgrade or similar way.

Sometimes different drivers for the same graphics adapter allow for different resolutions. If you can find a different driver for the integrated graphics you may want to try that. If you have a driver from ASUS now, you can try searching for a driver provided by Intel.

It may be a dead end but it's worth a shot.

From my experience..... with drivers like sound and display don't search of secondary drivers and don't let something like windows update tell you that you need them....... Asus sometimes does differnt things to their integrated graphics and sound to tweak them for a particular unit and their drivers may have different numebrs than what and updater might tell you that you want....

The only exception I've found would be the omega drivers for the ati graphics cards......

But I know for a fact that Asus' drivers certainly power that W5's screen atleast at it's native res and it should look beautiful as is..... so unless you messed with the drivers already, I just don't see how that could have happened.... Although, it obviously has, so figuring out a way to help you fix it is the best thing to do...... I'd say, try to reinstall the drivers that are already on there. Maybe something got corrupted.

You are right, using the brand drivers is usually best. They are probably faster too. And he should if he can get it working. But he sounds pretty concerned about the external monitor thing so if he can get that working and the tradeoff is somewhat slower drivers he may want to do that.

Driver updates by Windows Update is definitely not a good idea for those devices. That can really mess up your sound, graphics, tv-tuner...

Hmm, I think we may be talking about two different things here. You are right that ASUS' drivers should power the screen to the native display res. But the guy is talking about the "CRT channel" which I take it means the VGA Out. He should easily be able to go beyond the native res of the LCD when using an external monitor.

Why he can't use the 1280x1024 he's looking for is a good question though... The VGA Out should be able to handle a 5:4 res independently of the notebook's 16:10 res right?

wait a minute.. what did I miss? He's talking about pumping this out to an external monitor?

If thats the case........ you can use widescreen or regular ratio and you can actually pump that internal card up to UXGA or WUXGA if you have a monitor that can support it.......... I'm sorry.. can't believe I missed that...... but I know that built in drivers support it out of the box, so my point still stands... try to update them.

I've got help. Hehe. nice try.

"My friend , for your problem, would you please reinstall the VGA driver for a try?
If having any problems, please don't hesitate to let me know. Let's discuss this issue together."

This would be the famous and fabulous ASUS support? [ :D]
I wrote them that I tried it. Twice. And I am looking for a real help. I am curious what will be the next one.

Does anybody else have W5? [V]

LOL... that whole "Let's discuss this issue together" is a trademark of ASUS notebook support.
Perhaps a complete reinstallation/reformat is worth a try...?
I can't think of anything else other than reinstalling your video drivers...which you have already done.

The next one is: "This model support the resolution1280*800 at best. sorry for my last reply"
And nothing "let's discuss..." [B)] Does this mean that I mustn't continue discussing with them? [:I] But I will. I don't give up. I definitely need a full list from supported resolutions on VGA output. And I can approve that the best is 1280*800 but why I get there 1280*960 then? Ahh, Stupid thing.

    Hi,

Sorry I can't help you. I just wanted to ask how you like your W5 and if you think the screen size is too small.

    Hi!
I also have an Asus W5G00A (brand new and I'm trying to connect it to an HP 20" TFT L2025 at 1600x1200.

The usual options for resolution are all under or equal 1280x800 (native res of notebook's display).

If I remove all monitors from device manager and boot with the 20" tft attached, I can get an extended desktop to work with the tft running at 1600x1200, but at 8 bit color!

If I don't, and after some trys, I can get the same extended desktop running at 1920x1200, full color!

This is turning into a nightmare!

I'm running Win XP Pro SP2, latest intel drivers and hp's driver from the website.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

If somebody is interested in it, finally Asus has solved the external VGA port related problem.
Have to install latest BIOS and then latest VGA driver (from Intel site) 6.14.10.4363 and topic is solved. GOod luck.
