Every spec sheet I have seen for the W5A lists the LCD as having a resolution of 1280x800. Out of the box mine was set to 1280x768. I have tried several drivers and I cannot get 1280x800. Any ideas?

1280 x 768. All spec sheets for the W5 should just read WXGA... anyone who listed 1280 x 800 specifically is incorrect. Both resolutions are WXGA...... differences you'll see between them is probably 16:9 verses 16:10 ratio widescreens.

I don't care what Asus says because I've never trusted a thing thing printed on their site......... it's why we test everything out about a product because we go and confirm a single thing... but I stand by what I said... which is "anyone who listed 1280 x 800 specifically is incorrect" ......... which they are. This also isn't the first post about this so it shouldn't come as any surprise.

I didn't ask if you cared. I was pointing out that their site is wrong as is every other site I looked at that listed a resolution for the notebook. Thanks for yet another useless response.

You're ever so welcome. Would you like me to tell you that the screen is 1280 x 800 and your's is just broken? No... well rely on Asus' spec and everyone elses for that matter.

With that said, did I ask you for your opinion? No... I didn't think so either. I was trying to help, but it's obvious there are those who are beyond that point.

    Flashram,
My W5A does have 1280x800 resolution and it also has 1280x768. What driver do you use?

I did a clean install and tried both drivers on the Asus web site. Currently using 6.14.10.4308.

That's weird, I am using the same driver as yours now. However, even I used the old driver (the one from the CD), I still have 1280x800 resolution. so, when you use 1280x768 resolution, does the image look sharp?

I just check Asus global web site for the spec of W5A and found out that it might have 2 kind of screens, one has 1280x768 resolution the other has 1280x800. Asus Global site W5A spec

Wow, isn't that weird!? ASUS - who makes these systems and want to make a bigger brand in the U.S. - doesn't even have the facts straight. Holy cow!

Justin: How can ykhing have 1280x800 if the screen doesn't support it? Are you sure anyone saying 1280x800 are wrong? How come ASUS (who makes the darn system for crying out loud) apparently managed to f*** the spec sheet up?

Asus has posted wrong specs on their websites many times before. sometimes they just copy info from one model to the other if its just close.

Yeah well they should get their act together if they want to appear as a quality alternative to the other brands out there...

It makes them look so bad when they don't even know their own products. It's unbelievable that not one person in their whole organization notifies the right person about incorrect specs on the official site. Jeez.

I mean their products are (mostly) great... Stuff like this just pushes the brand image in the WRONG direction.

We've only seen one model come through here..... I wonder if they differ from white to black models? What do each of you have and what color is it?

Yeah, yeah... I know that because I remember you emailing me about it.... See, my W5 is white... it's therefore older than the Black ones...... I think the white serial numbers start with 53 and the black ones start with 55....... There could have been a difference somewhere in there. I'd open up a black one to test it out, but I completely believe you.... just trying to figure out why. WXGA is really all that matters and technically it shouldn't be approached any other way..... but why is the question. I'll take a look at one today and see if I can tell a difference in vertical clarity.

(personally, the res is so high for these little screen to begin with that I wonder if it's something that's actually pertinent)

It's pertinent to me. I passed on several other notebooks (Asus W3V and Sony VGN-T140P) with 1280x768 resolution because I wanted 1280x800. I CAN tell the difference, especially after using 1280x800 on my Dell 700m the past several months. The retailer I ordered from advertised 1280x800 and that's what I expected to get. FWIW, my W5A is white.

What's your serial number start with? below 55? I checked out the black models and those are 1280 x 800 and the white models, the ones I checked at 1280 x 768.

I didn't say there wasn't a difference, but there isn't one on the W5.... both look identical. But passing on a larger screen because you want 1280 x 800 and going with a smaller screen doesn't exacty seem like the best thing to do since they're two completely different computers......... but your dealer is completely responsible for posting it in such a way. Their excuse will be that Asus gives them the specs, but all in all, you *could* have the panel swapped for one in a black unit.

    Hello,

I've been interested in the W5a and may be purchasing one by the end of the summer. I've been keeping up with the posts here, and I was wondering if any more information was found out about this resolution vs color vs serial number issue.

I can tell you that so far Asus was amazed to here this... and when I told them I've got two sitting in front of me that are different, they said they'd look into it.
