According to the specs I have, my W5F has a built-in microphone (which was a recent and pleasant realization).

Unfortunately... I have no idea how to make it work! I can literally yell into the thing, but when I playback, I hear silence

Go into sound settings and make sure the mic is on and the volume is up and then go into sound recorder or something.... I don't think it's on all the time. I also believe, although I should go and look at one before I answer this.... but the mic is up on the screen bezel if I'm not mistaken.
