I've already done a clean install of Win XP Pro, but ever since I got this unit, I've had non-stop problems with the unit crashing while searching for a Wi-Fi signal.
I've tried managing WiFi with both Windows and Intel, but there's no difference in freezes. I've also run a memtest on my 1GB Corsair memory, plus the 512MB of system RAM both together and independently and found no errors!
I have two options:
1. do a complete reinstall and perhaps go back to Win Home that came the unit, but since I'v already done that three times in the past two months, I would like to avoid that.
2. ship the unit to Asus and use my Acer TM8104 while this cool baby is being fixed. This would suck majorly and there's no guarantee that Asus will actually be able to fix anything.
Any tips? Sorry about the long post.

I just read about this tip in one of the "freezing" posts:
In detail, the solution is:
1. Click on "Start"
2. Right click on "My Computer"
3. Select "Properties"
4. Select "Hardware" folder tab
5. Click on Device Manager"
6. Go to "Network Adapters" in the list
7. Right click on your Ethernet controller
8. Select "Properties"
9. Select "Power Management"folder tab.
10. Uncheck "Allow the computer...."
11. Click "OK" and close all windows...
I just did that, so let's see if that helps. -
Update: This maybe helpful for those of you with mysterious freezes. While working with my W5F, I noticed that most freezes involved having Firefox open. After installing IE 7.0 beta, which finally supports tabs, the freezes appear to have been eliminated.

There are certainly issues with windows powersaving features and firefox... I don't think it's really so much of a hardware issue... In my experience, one thing that's honestly good at this point is compatibility and microsoft with themselves..... little to now issues between xp and any centrino systems - at least Asus anyway..
.... having the hard drive turn off honestly causes issues with a lot of that stuff on a laptop...... my experience anyway... but at least you posted your fix, which is 10x more any others would have done.
Good work. -
The freezes are coming back, so it's time to do a clean install. Will search the forum for tips.

Unfortunately, that turned out to *not* be it either. Computer still crashes while searching for appropriate network. Although less frequently now, I'm going to reformat the drive and reinstall OS/drivers all over again.
I'm surprised we don't have a FAQ on that topic, especially considering how often everyone does it here!
