Greetings - my w5a has worked great for just over 3 years now. a few weeks ago, I started noticing some static noise when I moved the lid. the static went away...but now there is no sound at all! I actually dont use the sound too much - just when the 2 year old wants to go on Noggin.

I've read about some problems with the speakers not turning off when the headphone jack is plugged in, but I think this is a loose wire somewhere. I've built my own desktops, but have never done anything more than upgrade ram with a laptop...any suggestions? perhaps some good speakers that clip to the screen?

    TIA

Well I suppose if you are the tinkering type you could try & trace it. However it would be easier to buy a set of speakers , they range from $20usd to $200usd , & plug them in. Especially since you do not use sound much anyway. It's amazing how much better even low cost speakers sound compared to the internal notebook speakers.

I had the exact same issue with a Toshiba Tecra I had a few years ago. This is clearly a hardware issue like you mentioned. You could send your notebook to Asus for repairs - they will most likely just replace the speakers with new wiring.

Problem with sending to ASUS is they'd charge for the work, since it's out of warranty.

If the problem is with the speakers themselves and not on the circuit boards, then you can try getting the speakers from the eStore and replacing them. Can be some work, but it's not horribly difficult if you aren't scared of a bit of disassembly. However, you would probably need a disassembly manual for the W5.

But the easiest solution is indeed external speakers, or headphones.
