Can someone who has the stock Asus W7J notebook run CPU-Z on the cpu to determine the exact details of the notebook's processor, RAM, Motherboard, etc and post up screenshots here.

CPUZ is just ~400 KB and can be downloaded here :
    http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-135.zip

Screenshots can be taken in CPU-Z by pressing F5 on each tab.
Please convert the BMP format screenshots to JPG to save space and post here.

I am especially interested in determining what is the maximum frequency that this board supports in terms of RAM

    Thanks

Direct from the ASUS website to you:
    DDR2 533 MHz 512 MB DRAM, 1x SO-DIMM socket expandable to 1536MB

Why run/buy anything but DDR2 533???? there are no benifits, and therefore no reasons to not get the same ram....esp since the 512 is built in to the laptop, and there is no way to upgrade this or replace it.....mixing up ram speeds is not a great idea for stability.

    Thanks a
I am confused as to why they have used 533 RAM when the FSB of the processor is 667... im new to this stuff so dont know if anything faster in RAM is available ?

Yes, there is 667MHz DDR2 RAM available. This is what most Asus Core Duo laptops have (W3j, A8jm, etc). But the W7j has 512MB of RAM soldered onto the motherboard, and they chose to make it 533MHz for some reason. Therefore, the system's memory speed will always be 533, no matter what speed of RAM you add in the available slot. Most people say this makes a negligable difference in overall system speed.

Would you guys happen to know what the make of the inbuilt ram is ?
is it kingston / corsair / ocz ???
I am planning to switch the changeable ram to 1gb and get a total system memory of 1.5gb... i'd prefer to use the same make of ram thats already there

anybody with the cpuz screenies yet ?

CPU-Z should tell you the brand and serial # of the manufractured ram.

CPU-Z doesn't report the onboard ram unless you remove the stick from the expansion slot, at least not with the most current version.

667 is not much faster than 533 due to cas latency so asus saves some money on performance that can only be seen with benchmarks.

In those shots, the Nanya module in "Slot 1" is the upgradable memory module. If you try and look at "Slot 2", there is nothing there.

If you remove the upgrade module, it will report the onboard memory.

Doubt that is going to be an option. The ram modules are mixed as it is, as I'm pretty sure that the chips used for the onboard ram are different from the Nanya module in the upgradeable slot.

Just get a new ram module from a reliable brand, and you shouldn't run into any problems. I popped in a Transcend 1-gig stick, and it works perfectly.

Nanya is a huge memory manufacturer that supplies chips to many of the major ODM/OEM manufacturers for desktop and laptop units worldwide (it's everywhere, in everyone's systems). Acer's problem isn't the memory they put in the units, its the corners they cut on materials and construction to keep the cost down :p .

As BurnKnuckle said, just put in a reliable stick of 200pin notebook RAM and you'll be fine - check the ratings on NewEgg and choose one that you're comfortable with regarding price. There is no need whatsoever to try and match brand, other than to drive yourself crazy....
