W7J vs W3V palm rest paint wear

Had a look around and there are a lot of posts about the W3V paint wear on the palm rest, but I couldn't really find anything on the W7J.

Thinking of moving over to this laptop, the smaller size appeals to me. I was a little bothered with the paint wear on my W3V and I am concerned the same will happen with the W7J. Unfortunately, nobody stocks it around me so I can't see one in person.

I know they come in white and black, so I was wondering whether anyone could comment on their experience and which selection would be best.

They'll both be the same. I think some people are really going overboard though talking about it because I've seen years upon years of wear on these notebooks and none of them (mine, employess, or customers) look as bad as the hps, dells, sonys we see that are a lot newer.

Black is a "better" choice, if you can call the white a "bad" choice.... if you're in the US, you're only going to get the black model anyway, but for the sake of answering the quesiton..... the white will show more dirt... so you'll need to clean it off more with a damp rag (especially if you have dirty hands). The base material is dyed a black anyway.... so wear over a year or so on the black palmrest shouldn't be very noticable, if at all...... everyone is very different in their typing styles and that is where the problem lies. If you're rather light on your hands while typing, your palms really don't move around much. Also, some people have sweaty hands and that or the use of moisurizers is horrible for the paint as it can break it down over a shorter period of time.

Worst case - you could buy a new palmrest after a year or two... but I don't think that will be the case.

 

Something to also take into account is how different everyone's skin is. A person with rough dry skin will make a computer show wear faster than a person with soft moisturized skin. For example, my sister's laptop is overa year old and it shows very little signs of wear. she puts lotion on her hands. On the other hand, I have had my computer for a few months and the keyboard is already showing signs of wear. This is because my dry fingertips/fingerprints are acting like a fine grit sandpaper, thus the polished keys.

 

You buy a laptop and it's meant to be used. Don't interpret cosmetic imperfections as a flaw-- interpret it as a sign that your notebook is built to last. Stressing over small imperfections like these will make your use of the notebook more distracting than it really is.

Besides, three years down the road, you'll get a new notebook.

 

jsis - I hear what you're saying. Which is why the W7J appeals to me. For price versus performance and features I think it is the best in its class. Otherwise I would go for the Sony SZ since it has brushed palm rests, but I just can't warrant the price difference.

My Dell Inspiron which had a lighter silver finish wore quite quickly. I understand that wear and tear is part of the owning anything, but endeavouring to minimise the likelihood of its effects, I think is also a consideration of any savvy investor.

Anyway, it sounds like black is the way to go.

yes silver finish wears very fast. i was really surprised in my college there's a lot of silver toshibas and dells. more than one person had worn through to GREY on the palmrest, and these are 1-2 month old laptops.
now i know this sounds like a work-around, but why put your hands on the palmrest at all? its technically better for your hands to have them elevated over the keyboard. my w3j looks mint condition, and i don't rest my hands there.

 

It is probably not realistic for me to change my typing habits - if I tried it would probably last about 5 minutes. I use my laptop day in an day out and travel with it. Apart from the palm wear it is in great condition. I will pass this laptop onto someone else soon anyway.

 

Where can you order new palm rests for barebones? Specifically the z70va?

I've had my black W7J for about 2-3 months now. The palm rest on mine looks great at this point, except it's a little shinier where I rest my palms. However, this seems to just be skin oils on the surface, because it mostly disappears if I wipe it down with rubbing alcohol.

Actually, the spot that has the most visible wear is the touchpad, which is very shiny in the areas where I touch it the most. This also partially disappears if I clean it with rubbing alcohol, but returns rather quickly with use. I probably would have preferred a different type of material covering the touchpad because it sometimes gets a little sticky, but overall it's not a big deal. Other than that, the W7J has been perfect for my needs.

 

i dont have either one of the notebooks listed, but i have two circles that can be seen as white/black depending on the light.

they carry replacement parts, but if you're not comfortable about replacing your own parts, then good folks like proportable will assist you.

What you can also do i simply to order protective items, like Keyboard Protectors[/url[. If cosmetics are really significant for you, here's something ive..."theorized on" but not sure if it looks nice

Acquire a large piece of cuttable LCD/glass protector and cut it to fit over your entire piece of chassis. Then not likely will there be erosion on your actual finish

 

I have a pearl white S5Ne and have no wear on the palm rest. I've had it for
2 1/2 already. I finally upgraded my laptop, just ordered a W3J, hopefully it performs just as long without any problems!

 

I've had my w3v for a bit over a year now. I use it everyday at school and its not showing wear on the palm rest at all. Although i do notice a portion of the space bar smoothing out.
