A few days ago I went to shut down my W7J via the start, turn off computer way. Normally I wait till all the lights are off before I close the lid and put it away, but this time I closed the lid half way through the shutdown process and put it in my backpack. A few hours later I was dismayed that it was still running in my backpack! It was so HOT I could hardly touch the base.

Thankfully no major damage has been done, however the left side of the keyboard is bent slightly upwards so that the keys on that side have a funny "tinny" sound to them. No major drama, but slightly annoying..

    Questions then...

1:How do I prevent this from happening again?

2:Why did it happen in the first place?

3: Would it be covered under warranty?

Happen with my Z96J too, I think it's a Windows bug, you shutdown first and then close the lid when Windows still trying to shutdown, it will go to standby mode since you close the lid before Windows shuts down.

I don't consider this a bug if it doesn't happen all the time with many people. This is more like a freak, windows problem.

    This is my opinion.

I do have a part of a solution you may want to look into, but also discuss something aswell.

On your desktop, right click, properties, screen saver, click on Power, Advanced tab, then look at the Power Button section.

You will see "When I close the lid of my portabl computer:" then a drop down menu, also have a look at the other ones too.

Now the discussion about Hibernate vs shut down.
I personaly never use shut down, I think it is pointless since, I don't want to wait 50-70 seconds for my laptop to boot up, while my boot time out of hibernate is 30 seconds plus all my windows that were left open remain open.

Also since the option allows for close the lid and go into hibernate, I always close the lid and put it into my bag, cos it will take another 5-10 seconds befoer the lights turn off, to go into hibernate.

Is there a particular reason why you really want to shut down your laptop, than using hibernate?

Just like to add if you really really need to shut it down, I suggest you do shut it down, but also wait for your notebooks lights to turn off, and then close the lid and put into your bag, otherwise, try this, as a quick test, set the power button for Shut Down, and set the Lid to Do nothing, close the lid and see if that works.

Resuming from shut down takes about 3 seconds.

In vista you will be using the vista shut down and resume more often.

This is why I use shut down more often now.

Some software and situations will prevent shut down from happening. You have no guarantee by just closing the notebook that you will shut down until you see the light blinking. Some programs over ride shut down.

So if you get in the habit of closing it and having faith, you may damage your notebook. There is no real fix you have to wait until you see the light flashing.
